About each permit

Fire Inspection (new business and certificate of occupancy)

Laredo Code section 18-22 requires the Fire Department to review every new business for fire code compliance before a certificate of occupancy issues, and the Building Development Services Permit Applications page says every certificate of occupancy and letter of completion requires a building final inspection and a fire inspection. Amounts are from section 12-81 Exhibit A (last amended by Ord. No. 2024-O-211), read together with section 12-82, which charges them only when a business does not pass on the first visit. The City's 2026 Business Application form shows the Fire Department inspection fee as to be determined under Ordinance 2007-O-036. The Fire Department Permits Office is at 1413 Houston Street.

Vent Hood Extinguishing System Permit and Plan Review

Laredo Code section 12-81 Exhibit A lists plan review for a vent hood system at $180.00 per hood, under the plan review heading of the Fire Department's fee schedule (last amended by Ord. No. 2024-O-211). The Fire Department Permits Office page publishes a Vent Hood Extinguishing System Permit Application alongside its other system permit applications. A kitchen that cooks under a commercial hood with a fire-suppression system needs this review; a coffee shop or restaurant without a hood system does not.

Spray Paint Booth Permit

Laredo Code section 12-81 Exhibit A lists spray paint booths under the Fire Department's permits at $180.00 per booth (fee schedule last amended by Ord. No. 2024-O-211, 28 October 2024). It applies to body shops and other auto-repair businesses that operate a spray booth; a mechanical repair shop without a paint booth has no booth permit. Exhibit A also lists operating without a permit at the permit fee plus 150 percent of the permit fee.
