About each permit

Fire Alarm Permit

$50 flat for a fire alarm permit. Modifying an existing system is $5 per device for one to nine devices, or $50 for ten to two hundred. Retesting sprinklers or alarms is $40 per test, and a same-day cancellation that forces a re-schedule is $50 — the same as the permit itself.

Fire Plan Review

$50 an hour to review sprinkler, site and fire alarm plans, with a minimum of two hours on sprinkler plans — so $100 is the floor there. Charged by time rather than by building area or device count, which is unusual: Pasadena bands the same review at $230 to $900 by square footage.

Temporary Aboveground Flammable Liquid Tank Permit

Priced by how long you need it: $50 for a Temp A at 90 days, $75 for a Temp B at 180 days and $100 for a Temp C at one year. Brownsville is the only city in this dataset that tiers a tank permit by duration rather than charging a flat annual fee — useful for a contractor with fuel on site for a single season.

Storage Tank Permit

Aboveground storage tanks are $75. Underground tanks are $50 per tank, rising to $75 where the tank exceeds 10,000 gallons — so the underground charge is per tank while the aboveground one is not. A liquid propane gas tank permit is $50.

Certificate of Occupancy Fire Inspection

$30 under 1,500 square feet and $50 at or above it — among the cheapest occupancy fire inspections in this dataset, against Fort Worth's $55 to $195 banded schedule and Pasadena's $65 an hour. Paid at the same time as the $100 certificate through the Accela portal, so the total is $130 or $150. Schedule the inspection on 956-548-6075; if the fire inspector requires repairs, make them and notify the office for a re-check before the certificate can issue.

Fire Sprinkler System Permit

$100 covers a new system or an addition up to 200 heads, then fifty cents a head above that, capped at $1,500 once you pass 3,000 heads. A small tenant fit-out therefore permits for $100 — cheaper than Odessa, which charges $150 plus three cents a square foot for the same work. A major sprinkler system taken as an underground fire line permit is a separate $100, and the initial inspection covering underground fire line, sprinkler system and fire alarm together is $100.

Fixed Pipe Extinguishing System Inspection

$40 to inspect a fixed pipe extinguishing system — the commercial kitchen hood suppression system over a cooking line, and the commercial cooking suppression systems the Fire Marshal's page lists among its programmes. The cheapest hood-related fire charge in this dataset: Grand Prairie charges $75 for the equivalent permit and Pasadena folds it into a $200 automatic extinguishing system review.

Sprinkler Modification Permit

Moving nine sprinkler heads or fewer costs $5 a head — as little as $5 for a single head. From ten heads up to two thousand it is a flat $50. This is the cheapest way through a partition change in any city covered here, and it is worth knowing before a landlord quotes a fit-out on the assumption that touching the sprinklers means a full system permit.
