About each permit
Fire Operational Permit and Annual Inspection
The fee table at CBJC 19.01.108.15.1 lists no fee for the routine annual inspection. The Fire Marshal's page states its scope plainly — 'Every building in the City & Borough of Juneau where the public works, plays or spends time is subject to annual inspections. Private residences are not' — and the only inspection entries in the table are the $50.00 childcare or daycare inspection and the $50.00 courtesy inspection. No provision expressly waives a fee, so ask the Fire Marshal whether any charge applies. The permits that do cost money are activity-based and land unevenly across trades: an auto repair shop storing flammable or combustible materials pays $50.00 and $50.00 again for a paint booth, rising to $100.00 if its materials are classified hazardous; a restaurant with an open-flame display pays $50.00; a childcare centre pays the $50.00 inspection. One qualification in the code is worth noting because it prevents over-reading the IFC: 19.01.105.1.5 states that 'not all of the permits identified in IFC 105.6 and IFC 105.7 are required.'
Child Care Facility — State License; Conditional Use and Fire Inspection Apply (Juneau)
Licensing is a state function here, unlike Anchorage where the Municipality licenses childcare itself — the Alaska Child Care Program Office covers facilities located outside Anchorage, which includes Juneau. What Juneau charges is the $50.00 fire inspection and, where zoning requires it, the conditional use permit. The Class I and Class II split is the detail worth planning around: a child care home is Class I at $350.00 while a child care centre is Class II at $500.00, so the choice of format changes the land use cost as well as the state license category. Child care services are also expressly exempt from Juneau sales tax, which is a genuine saving in a jurisdiction that taxes most services at five percent.
Auto Repair Shop — Fire Storage Permits Apply (Juneau)
This listing carries no fee: CBJ Title 20's chapter list names no automotive repair chapter, and the fee sections of 12 AAC 02 name no state auto repair license. What a shop does owe is the sales tax registration, the development and building permits, and the fire permits its materials trigger: $50.00 for flammable or combustible material storage, $100.00 for hazardous material storage and $50.00 for a paint booth, each charged where the review is not already part of a building permit. A shop is also caught by the Cross Connection Control Program's annual backflow testing duty, with a passing report due by November 1 each year. Repairs and services are taxable at five percent, so a shop collects sales tax on labour as well as parts.
