Business licenses and permits in St. Lucie County, Florida
St. Lucie County, Florida, has its seat at Fort Pierce. Its three incorporated municipalities are the City of Port St. Lucie, the City of Fort Pierce and the Town of St. Lucie Village. The St. Lucie County Tax Collector issues the county Local Business Tax Receipt under County Code Ch. 42, Art. III, and its Local Business Tax page states that all businesses operating within city limits must obtain both city and county business tax receipts; County Code s. 42-108(a) provides for county business tax revenue collected from businesses located within a municipality, as F.S. 205.033(4) contemplates. Each city also runs its own business tax, zoning and building permitting, which stack on the county receipt and are not described here. The county's Permitting page states that the City of Ft Pierce, the City of Port St. Lucie and the Town of St. Lucie Village have their own permitting requirements and issue their own permits, so county zoning compliance, building permits, sign permits and the county Certificate of Competency apply in unincorporated St. Lucie County. Fire inspections for a business tax receipt are made by the St. Lucie County Fire District, an independent special district with its own Board of Commissioners and fee resolution. Value-based building permit fees are not printed here because Laws of Florida Ch. 2026-63 bars inspection fees based on the total cost of a project. The population figure of 390,670 is the U.S. Census Bureau's 2024 estimate.

County Code s. 42-103 requires a business tax receipt, issued by the St. Lucie County Tax Collector, to engage in business in the county, and s. 42-108(a) provides for business tax revenues collected by the county from businesses whose places of business are located within a municipality; F.S. 205.033(4) apportions county business tax revenue between the unincorporated area and the municipalities. The rates in this record are the code's own section rates for general business (s. 42-120), restaurants and take-out (s. 42-116, seats counted using the DBPR Division of Hotels and Restaurants classifications) and contracting (s. 42-117).
