What does a contractor or trade need in St Lucie County that other businesses do not?
3 of the 3 permits particular to a contractor or trade here apply to no other business type we cover in St Lucie County: St. Lucie County Certificate of Competency (Contractors), Filing of State Certified Contractors with St. Lucie County and Contractor License.
St. Lucie County Certificate of Competency (Contractors)
County Code Ch. 10, Art. II sets the St. Lucie County Certificate of Competency for contractors working in unincorporated St. Lucie County, administered by the Contractor Licensing Department with the Contractors Examining Board. Applicants must pass the examination with a score of 70 percent (s. 10-57), and s. 10-59 sets minimum net worth requirements, including $10,000.00 for a general contractor. Section 10-24 provides that all fees are established by resolution of the board of county commissioners. The figures in this record are those printed on the county's current application forms, revised October 3, 2025 and linked from the Contractor Applications page; the forms label the $150.00 application fee and the $35.00 journeyman electrician fee "(Subject to change)". Under s. 10-60(a) every certificate expires annually at midnight on September 30; a certificate not renewed becomes inoperative and may be restored within 12 months on payment of the late renewal fee prescribed by resolution. A contractor working inside Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce or St. Lucie Village follows that municipality's rules. Contractor Licensing Department: 2300 Virginia Ave, Ft Pierce, FL 34982 (772-462-1672).
Filing of State Certified Contractors with St. Lucie County
A contractor holding a state certification from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation files that license with the St. Lucie County Contractor Licensing Department using the Filing of State Certified Contractors form, linked from the county's Contractor Applications page. The form (revised October 3, 2025) requires a certificate of insurance for workers' compensation and general liability naming St. Lucie County Contractor Licensing as holder, or a workers' compensation exemption certificate, together with a copy of the DBPR license, a copy of a driver's license and notarization; the email address given on the form becomes the username for the county's contractor portal. No fee is printed on the form. Contractor Licensing Department: 2300 Virginia Ave, Ft Pierce, FL 34982 (772-462-1672).
Contractor License
The two routes cost the same to keep and differ sharply at entry: certification is $335 for application and examination, registration is $100. What you get differs too — a certified license works anywhere in Florida, while a registered one is valid only where you hold local competency approval, so the cheaper route can cost more in practice if you work across county lines. Qualifying a business organisation is a separate license again at $50, with its own $50 biennial renewal, and it is the piece most often missed. An inactive license renews at $50. Letting a license go null and void costs $100 to reinstate, and a delinquency fee is $25.
The other 5 local permits in the tables apply to every type of business in St Lucie County, FL; what each one involves is set out on the St Lucie County permits page. The 6 state-level registrations apply to every type of business across FL and are covered on the FL state page.
