What do these permits involve in San Jose?

Business Tax Certificate

Confirmed directly against the city's own current rate table, which the requester supplied after sanjoseca.gov refused every automated attempt. The rate rolls over every July 1 — this record formerly carried the July 2025–June 2026 base of $219.60, and the current rate of $222.89 above reflects the July 1, 2026 rollover. This certificate does not itself confer zoning, fire or occupancy approval, which are separate requirements.

Sign Permit (Planning Division)

The Planning Division's Sign Permit Application (02/26/2026) states that, unless a sign is an exempt type under SJMC §23.02.1310, a permit from the Planning Division is required for all free-standing signs and signs attached to the exterior of a building, with fees per the Planning Fee Schedule. The Planning Application Filing Fee Schedule effective August 10, 2026 lists 'Sign Permit Adjustment, Single Sign $398 + $51' and 'Multiple Sign Review (Per Each Additional Sign) $99 + $12', and the City's Planning Applications page lists the Sign Permit Application at '$449 (base fee) $111 per additional sign' — the same totals. The $51 and $12 are the 13.00% Citywide Planning Fee adopted with the 2026-2027 budget. A sign may also need a building permit, priced separately.
