About each permit
Tobacco Retail License
Under SJMC §6.87.200 every tobacco retailer needs a tobacco retail license from the director for each location where tobacco retailing occurs; §6.87.130 defines a tobacco retailer as anyone who sells tobacco products or tobacco paraphernalia, regardless of quantity. The $662 permit fee and the reinspection, reinstatement and transfer fees are from the 2026-2027 Fees and Charges Planning, Building and Code Enforcement section (Tobacco Retail Program); the August 4, 2026 Adopted Fees and Charges memorandum made no change to them. Under §6.87.465 a retailer who keeps selling more than 30 days after the license expires pays a 10% penalty on top of the new-license fee.
Off-Sale Alcohol Inspection Program Fee
Under SJMC §6.86.300.A the property owner of premises where an off-sale alcoholic beverage establishment (any business selling alcohol for off-premises consumption, §§6.86.040, 6.86.060) operates pays an annual inspection program fee, which covers program administration and an annual inspection; a penalty is added if it is unpaid 30 days after notice. The $937 'Off-Sale Alcohol Permit' fee is from the 2026-2027 Fees and Charges Planning, Building and Code Enforcement section (Off-Sale Alcohol Enforcement Program), unchanged by the August 4, 2026 adopted-fees memorandum; the same section lists reinspection, reinstatement and transfer fees. A store that sells alcohol also needs its California ABC license.
Auto Body Repair Shop Permit
Under SJMC §6.15.200 no one may operate an auto body repair shop without an auto body repair shop permit from the director of Planning, Building and Code Enforcement. §6.15.020 defines that as a place of business of an automotive repair dealer where collision repair or reconstruction of automobile or truck bodies is performed, so a general mechanical repair shop that does no body or collision work is outside it. Applicants submit a storm water pollution prevention plan and security plan (§§6.15.230, 6.15.240). The $468 permit and $303 reinspection fees are from the 2026-2027 Fees and Charges Planning, Building and Code Enforcement section, unchanged by the August 4, 2026 adopted-fees memorandum.
