About each permit

Hazardous Materials Permit (San José Fire Department)

The 2026-2027 Fees and Charges Fire Department section lists Hazardous Materials Permits under Annual Renewable Operating Permits at $278 per quantity range (was $270), names a separate line for 'Liquified Carbon Dioxide for Beverage Dispensing' charged as one quantity range, and charges propane as two quantity ranges; the August 4, 2026 adopted-fees memorandum made no change to these lines. The same document's Minimum Reportable Threshold Quantity table states that, unless the Fire Marshal requires otherwise, a facility storing only one of the following is exempt from the reporting requirements and permit fees: 5 gallons or less of Class I flammable liquids, 10 gallons or less of Class II or III-A combustible liquids, 10 gallons or less of waste oil, a solvent parts washer of up to 30 gallons, small amounts of corrosives, or one oxyacetylene torch. A shop holding more than one of these, or larger amounts, is within the permit. The City's Operational Permits page says SJFD inspects all facilities that use, store or handle hazardous materials.
