About each permit
Food Establishment Permit
Amarillo sets no food permit fee of its own. Section 8-5-15(b)(1) provides that food establishment permit fees are assessed annually “in accordance with the rates, as amended, established by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Retail Food Safety Group” — so the operative figures are the state’s: $258 up to $49,999.99 of gross annual food sales, $515 from $50,000 to $149,999.99 and $773 at $150,000 or more. That adoption by reference is why no Amarillo food fee schedule exists to be found, and it is also why these are the same three figures McKinney and Williamson County charge. The rates apply to initial applications, renewals and change of ownership alike; amending a permit is $125, $250 or $375 on the same bands. The permit runs one year from the date of application, not from issue. The regulator is the Amarillo Area Public Health District.
Fats, Oils and Grease Permit
$145 a year per establishment — the highest standing grease permit in this dataset, against $100 a year in Pearland. Biological Oxygen Demand and Total Suspended Solids testing are charged separately at industry cost rather than at a set rate, so a kitchen whose discharge needs testing has an open-ended item here. Any commercial kitchen with an interceptor needs this on top of the food establishment permit.
On-Site Sewage Facility (OSSF) Permit
$900 per facility for a commercial new system, modification, repair or replacement, against $800 residential — the dearest OSSF permit in this dataset, above Brazos County’s $570 and Corpus Christi’s $500. Inspecting an existing system is half the price of the corresponding permit. Starting work before the permit issues adds $350, and $700 on a second or subsequent occasion, on top of the permit fee itself. Applies to premises on septic rather than mains sewer, which outside the built-up area is common.
Child Care Facility Environmental Inspection
$350 per property, required annually — by a wide margin the most expensive municipal child care inspection covered here, against $200 a year in Garland, $170 in El Paso and $150 per inspection in Brazos County. It is charged per property rather than per child or per room, so a large nursery pays the same as a small one. Separate from the state license held from Texas Health and Human Services. A foster or adoption home is $150 for the first structure and $75 for each additional structure on the property, also annually.
