About each permit

Certificate of Occupancy

A standalone Certificate of Occupancy fee is not published in Warwick's current Permit Fees schedule, which lists only the project-valuation building permit brackets, the $75.00 minimum and the State CE/ADA add-on; the Building Department page and its residential and commercial Building Permit checklists state no separate Certificate of Occupancy charge either. A Certificate of Occupancy remains a required close-out step confirming code compliance for new construction or a change of use, issued by the Building Department after final inspections; contact the Building Department at (401) 738-2007 to confirm whether any charge applies beyond the Building Permit fee recorded above.

Sign Permit (fee not published)

The sign permit fee amount is not published on the City's website. The Building Department's 'Building Department Forms' page lists residential and commercial permit checklists, the Permit Fees schedule, a Building Board of Appeals application, a Business License Application and a Project Certification form, with no dedicated sign permit application or fee schedule, and the one-page Permit Fees schedule carries only the project-valuation building permit brackets. The 46-row table in Code of Ordinances §18-2 ('Miscellaneous license fees') lists no sign entry. The City's OpenGov portal carries a Sign Permit application type (Building Department category) whose fee lines are named 'Sign Permit Fee,' 'Levy Fee' and first- and second-offence penalty fees, with the amounts shown only inside the application flow; contact the Building Department at (401) 738-2007 for the current amount. A sign requiring structural or electrical work would separately require the standard Building Permit already recorded above.

Child Care Facility — Warwick Permit Fees Schedule and State License

The City publishes no separate childcare inspection fee. Unlike Cranston's Building Inspection fee schedule (which lists a distinct $75.00 'Day care Inspections' line), Warwick's one-page Permit Fees schedule contains no day-care, school or gym inspection line item, and the City's Human Services page lists associated programs, family services, senior services and transportation services with no childcare or daycare licensing or inspection. A childcare business in Warwick follows the same Building Permit, Zoning Certificate and Zoning Board of Review process recorded on this page for any other commercial use, alongside Rhode Island's state Child Care License (Department of Human Services, Office of Child Care Licensing, recorded on the Rhode Island state page).

Building Permit

Warwick's own current fee schedule states it is 'State Mandated as of July 1, 2018,' with bracket rates that match Rhode Island's own Building Code Commission regulation (510-RICR-00-00-21 §21.12, item 35, 'City of Warwick') — the identical $10.00/$8.00/$6.00-per-$1,000 brackets and $75.00 minimum appear in both documents. These figures are genuinely different from both Cranston's ($20.00/$18.00/$16.00 per $1,000, $75.00 minimum) and Providence's ($23.00/$21.00/$19.00 per $1,000, $125.00 minimum) own city-specific schedules under the same statewide regulation. A separate Building Board of Appeals (also called the Building Code Board of Appeals) fee applies only if a State Building Code decision is petitioned for variation: $50.00 for a one- or two-family residential structure, $250.00 for a commercial structure, per the City's own current application form. Commercial submittals are filed through Rhode Island's own statewide e-permitting portal (permits.ri.us) with plans stamped by a registered architect or engineer.

Contractor Registration — Rhode Island RICRB Registration Applies (Warwick)

The City publishes no local contractor registration fee. Warwick's Building Department Forms page lists permit checklists, the Permit Fees schedule, a Building Board of Appeals application, a Business License Application and a Project Certification form, and links to the RI Contractors Registration Board; the Police Department Licensing Division page lists Concealed Carry, Weapons Carry and Raffle applications. Neither names a local contractor license or registration category. A contractor working in Warwick registers with Rhode Island's state RICRB ($150.00/year, recorded on the Rhode Island state page), an agency headquartered within Warwick's city limits, and pulls the Building Permit recorded on this page for each project.
