About each permit
Childcare / Daycare / Preschool Licensing — Clark County Position
The County's own published license category list (rev. 09.2024) states, verbatim, 'There is NO local licensing requirement for preschools and/or childcare/daycare facilities within Clark County. Please contact the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services for information about state licensing requirements.' On that statement, there is no County business-license fee for a preschool, childcare centre or daycare facility as such. Related Code provisions are §6.10.020(c)(1) (a Chapter 6.10 work card for 'Family home care providers,' priced by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department) and §7.200.020.010's definition of a 'Childcare facility' by reference to the State's own Chapter 432A license. That exemption does not reach every childcare-adjacent category: the same category-list row also lists 'Kindergartens,' which pay a $250 annual Educational Institution license under Code §6.12.462 because a school-type kindergarten is licensed as a school, not exempted as daycare; and Adult Day Care is its own $200-a-year County license under §6.12.035, unrelated to child daycare. Daycare is also a County requirement outside the business-license system: Title 30's Unified Development Code defines 'Daycare' and 'Family Daycare' as land uses and its use table lists Daycare as a special use in residential zoning districts and permitted with conditions in most commercial districts — so a childcare business still needs to clear zoning. A Southern Nevada Health District child-care health permit is required and listed as a separate record. Ask the Department of Business License at (702) 455-0174, or Comprehensive Planning at (702) 455-4314 for the zoning treatment of a specific site.
Business License — Cosmetology Establishment (salon) / Barbershop
A hair, nail or skin salon in the unincorporated area — defined by §6.12.385 as 'any premises, mobile unit, building or part of a building where cosmetology is practiced, other than a licensed barbershop, in which one or more licensed cosmetologists, aestheticians and/or manicurists practice' — pays $35 per half-year for its first station and $15 for each additional station. A barbershop licensed under NRS Chapter 643 pays $35 semiannually for its first chair, $25 for each additional chair, and $25 for a manicurist or shoe-shine stand operating in it (§6.12.195). The underlying state cosmetology or barber establishment license must be held first (Code §6.04.105). Body art, tattoo and permanent makeup are separate County categories (§6.12.235, §6.12.946, §6.12.784), and Southern Nevada Health District body-art permits apply to them rather than this license. One-time $45 application fee. Ask the Department of Business License at (702) 455-0174.
Mobile Food Vendor Business License (food trucks, carts, ice-cream trucks, hot-dog stands) — regulated license
A food truck, cart, hot-dog stand or ice-cream truck selling in the unincorporated area needs a regulated Mobile Food Vendor license under Code Chapter 6.130: a regulated-license packet, a $2,000 cash or surety bond (§6.130.050 via §6.56.070), public-liability insurance of $100,000 per person / $300,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage (§6.130.020(5)), a Southern Nevada Health District mobile food permit (a separate record), and a work card for the vendor and any food-handling employees. The fee itself is priced by gross revenue: §6.130.060 points to a section that no longer exists in the Code ('Section 6.12.835'), but the Department of Business License's own current Regulated License Guide lists 'Mobile Food Vendor 722330 $45.00 $25.00 (Gross Revenue) Semi-Annual' — $25.00 per half-year, the same floor as the first tier of the §6.12.995 table, plus the $45 application fee. Operating limits: no sales within 500 feet of a school during session, no operation between 10 p.m. and three hours after sunrise except at a construction site or a commercial place already open for business, and selling from the public right-of-way is otherwise unlawful (Code §6.04.130, §6.130.020(6)-(7)). Licenses are non-transferable and vehicles may not be leased to drivers (§6.130.030). Ask the Department of Business License at (702) 455-0174.
Retail Liquor License (restaurant, retail store) — Liquor & Gaming (privileged)
A restaurant or retail store that sells, serves or gives away alcohol in the unincorporated area needs a County retail liquor license from the Department of Business License, in addition to its general license, state requirements and the Southern Nevada Health District permit. The realistic fee range for these two industries runs from $125 a quarter (retail beer or retail wine) to $450 a quarter (package liquor for a qualifying retail store) — not the $525 'main bar' figure, since a main bar license is reserved for resort hotels, gaming establishments, large hotels and similar venues that a stand-alone restaurant or store cannot become. A retail beer, retail wine or beer/wine/spirit license is available only to a restaurant that is a 'billiard parlor, a restaurant and category 2 restaurant' under §8.20.020.320 — a County-defined 'coffee shop' filed as a 'Snack and Non-Alcoholic Beverage Bar' is not a restaurant for this purpose and cannot hold one of these licenses, unless the premises separately qualifies as a Category 2 restaurant by having at least 12 seats and preparing food on site, in which case it applies as that kind of restaurant rather than as a coffee shop. A retail store instead needs a package license, restricted to the store types §8.20.020.265(a) lists and requiring 1,200 square feet of display space (§8.20.250(b)). On top of the per-quarter fee: a $50 application processing fee and $15-per-quarter renewal fee under §8.20.025 (separate from the general $45 business-license fee), and a $350 non-refundable LVMPD investigation-fee deposit under §8.20.080/§8.08.230, with the applicant responsible for the entire investigation cost win or lose. Alcohol may not be sold or served through a drive-thru or walk-up window (§8.20.312), though the Board may approve one for food service only in conjunction with the license (§8.20.313(b)); a limited-service restaurant with fewer than 12 seats is separately ineligible under §8.20.020.315. Late-payment penalties under §6.04.060(a) do not apply to liquor licenses. Clark County Code Chapter 8.20 has been actively amended through 2026 — confirm current fees with the Department of Business License before applying them.
Business License — Health & Fitness Center; Fitness Trainer; Martial Arts; Dance Studio
A gym, yoga or pilates studio, or other fitness studio in the unincorporated area pays a semiannual 'health and fitness center master license' on the same §6.12.995 gross-revenue table used by restaurants and retail; §6.12.575 adds that the license 'may also provide refreshments, food, and retail sales, but does not include privileged or regulated activities' such as amusement machines or tobacco permits, and that a leaseholder operating inside the centre needs its own separate license. Trainers who coach independently inside the studio may each need the $200 annual health/fitness trainer license (§6.12.569). Martial-arts schools pay $150 a year and every instructor needs a Chapter 6.10 work identification card, priced by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department rather than the Code; dance studios pay $150 a year. A studio built around sports training rather than fitness membership — gymnastics, cheerleading or swim instruction, sports camps — is its own County category, 'Sports Training (Except Martial Arts),' priced as a $250 annual Educational Institution license under §6.12.462 rather than on gross revenue, so a mixed business should confirm which category it actually falls under. Massage, reflexology and pool operations fall under other chapters (Chapter 7.08 massage; Southern Nevada Health District pool/spa permits). Every category also pays the one-time $45 application fee. Ask the Department of Business License at (702) 455-0174 which category fits a mixed studio.
Business License — Restaurant / Take-Out / Snack Bar / Coffee Shop (gross-revenue)
Required for any restaurant, take-out restaurant, snack or coffee bar, or ice cream/yogurt shop in the unincorporated area (Code §6.04.010), priced semiannually on the gross-revenue tier table at §6.12.995. §6.12.873, §6.12.942 and §6.12.596 each say their fee 'shall be determined by the amount of semiannual gross revenue as contained in the schedule of Section 6.12.995,' but §6.12.874 (Restaurant Category 2, the 12-seat-minimum category) states only a seating threshold and no fee sentence at all — a Category 2 restaurant, and a coffee shop filed as a 'Snack and Non-Alcoholic Beverage Bar,' price off the County's own category list rather than that section, and both still land on the §6.12.995 table. A one-time $45 non-refundable application fee applies (Code §6.08.030), and §6.08.070 lets an applicant who files at least one month into the semiannual cycle prorate that fee monthly rather than pay the full half-year rate. Late renewals carry a 10% penalty after 15 days and 20% after 30 days, and a license unpaid at 60 days is deemed revoked (Code §6.04.060(a)); operating before licensure adds a 50% penalty (§6.04.060(c)). Under Code §6.04.110(a), a license issues or renews only once the Southern Nevada Health District permit and Comprehensive Planning, Fire, Air Quality and Animal Protection Services approvals are on file, and §9.20.010 separately holds a new business's license pending the health permit. Selling alcohol needs the separate County liquor license, listed as its own Clark County record. Alcohol may not be sold or served through a drive-thru or walk-up window (Code §8.20.312); the Board may, for good cause, approve such a window for food service only in conjunction with the liquor license (§8.20.313(b)) — it is a conditional path, not an outright ban on a windowed restaurant holding one. Apply online, by appointment or by mail; ask the Department of Business License at (702) 455-0174.
Business License — Auto Repair Facility (also Auto Body & Paint; Auto Wash/Detailing)
An automotive repair or maintenance business (excluding body and paint) prices on the §6.12.995 gross-revenue table under §6.12.150; a body/paint shop prices the same way under §6.12.160 but must first hold its Nevada NRS Chapter 487 body-shop license, since Code §6.04.105 blocks a county license from issuing until every required state license, certificate or permit is in hand. A body/paint shop with a spray booth also needs the Division of Air Quality's commercial surface-coating permit, listed as a separate Clark County record. Auto wash and detailing operations, whether stationary or mobile, instead pay a flat $150 a year per business under §6.12.155. Only mobile auto wash and detailing units carry a signage duty: §6.12.155 requires 'each person engaged in auto wash detail from a mobile vehicle' to post the license number, business name and phone number on the rear bumper of each vehicle to the right of the license plate — a stationary, fixed-location car wash carries no such rear-bumper requirement. Zoning, Fire and Air Quality sign-offs are collected by the Department of Business License before any of these licenses issues (Code §6.04.110(a)). Every category also pays the one-time $45 application fee. Ask the Department of Business License at (702) 455-0174.
Business License — Contractor (state-licensed contractors)
A contractor working in the unincorporated area pays $100 per half-year for the county contractor business license under Code §6.12.365, which is not issued 'to any contractor who is required to hold a license issued by the Nevada State Contractor's Board, unless such contractor is the holder of a valid and existing state license' — the state Chapter 624 license must be held first. Owner-builders improving their own property for their own occupancy, and certain government employees confined to employer premises, are exempt. A non-contractor handyman or repair business is a separate County category priced at $150 a year rather than this license. Contractors based in one of the five cities who also work in the unincorporated area may need this license in addition to their city license — the County's guide directs them to its 'Contractor/Multi-Jurisdictional License Search' page. Building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits for the work itself, and, for ground disturbance, an Air Quality dust control permit, are listed as their own Clark County records. One-time $45 application fee. Ask the Department of Business License at (702) 455-0174.
Sidewalk Vendor Business License (food and beverage carts and stands on public sidewalks)
Applies only to a vendor who 'sells food or beverages upon a public sidewalk or pedestrian path' from a pushcart, stand, display, wagon or rack (§7.200.020.190), stationary or roaming — not to a motorised food truck. Sidewalk vending is a distinct chapter from mobile food vending: §7.200.030 states this chapter 'does not apply to a person, business or vehicle ... operating pursuant to ... Chapter 6.130,' the mobile food vendor chapter (a separate record), so the two licenses are mutually exclusive and this record is not tagged as a food-truck requirement. §7.200.120 sets the fee at $150 a year, matching the Department's Regulated License Guide ('Sidewalk Vendor 722340 $45.00 $150.00 Annual'), plus the one-time $45 application fee. Every sidewalk vendor must also obtain and maintain a Southern Nevada Health District permit (§7.200.080(a)), and the business license is automatically revoked if that health permit is revoked (§7.200.080(b), citing NRS 446.883). §7.200.060 requires general-liability insurance of at least $250,000 per person, $500,000 per accident and $50,000 property damage, naming Clark County as an additional insured. Hours and location limits appear at §7.200.180-.190. Ask the Department of Business License at (702) 455-0174.
Professional Business License — Veterinarian (veterinary clinic / animal hospital)
A veterinary clinic or animal hospital in the unincorporated area pays $300 per year for each professional — each veterinarian on staff — 'whether the fee is paid by the individual professional or by a professional business with which the individual professional is associated' (Code §6.12.1005(a), (a)(1)); §6.12.1000(b)(16) names 'Veterinarian' among the licensed professions this applies to. Retail products or services not required for the practice itself, such as pet food, boarding or grooming, need a separate gross-revenue license under §6.12.1005(b), and §6.12.792 confirms veterinarians are excluded from the pet-shop category. Code §6.04.005 defines a 'professional' as someone holding the relevant state regulatory license (here, the Nevada Chapter 638 veterinary license), holding the underlying degree, and practising for compensation — a veterinary technician does not independently trigger the $300 fee. Title 10, Chapter 10.30 (Minimum Standards for Professional Animal Care Facilities) sets operating standards and a bi-annual premises inspection for veterinary hospitals and contains no permit or fee section of its own, and Animal Protection Services reviews the business-license application under Code §6.04.110(a). The state veterinary license must be held first (§6.04.105) and is recorded at the state layer. One-time $45 application fee.
Business License — Retail Store (gross-revenue)
Every retail store in the unincorporated area needs a County business license priced on the same §6.12.995 gross-revenue table used by restaurants, plus the one-time $45 application fee. There is no single universal semiannual cycle for retail: Retail Group 1 categories mostly run Feb-Jul/Aug-Jan and Retail Group 2 categories mostly run Jan-Jun/Jul-Dec, but Gift, Novelty and Souvenir Stores and Shoe Stores run Mar-Aug/Sept-Feb despite being grouped with categories on a different cycle, so the cycle has to be checked per category rather than assumed from the group number. Specific product lines each have their own Code section and category — clothing (§6.12.310, whose codified text points to '§6.12.295' though the County's category list resolves clothing to Retail Group 1 and §6.12.995), convenience stores, jewelry, pet supplies, sporting goods and others — but all of them price on the same table. Tobacco Stores is an ordinary Retail Group 2 gross-revenue category priced by §6.12.969 through §6.12.995, not a separately priced tobacco license. A store selling several product lines may pay on total volume under one license and the minimum on the others, or keep separate accounts (Code §6.12.995(c)). Convenience stores with fuel pumps, adult retail, and liquor or tobacco sales have additional categories or licenses of their own. The state business license and sales tax are recorded at the state layer; ask the Department of Business License at (702) 455-0174 which category and cycle fits a specific store.
