About each permit
Commercial Building Permit & Certificate of Occupancy
As published in Table 1A and Table 1B of Lincoln Municipal Code §20.06.130 (Schedule of Permit Fees), the building permit fee is banded by project valuation, with a commercial plan-review fee and a separate occupancy permit fee on top. A food establishment's occupancy permit is issued through this same Building & Safety process once LLCHD's own inspection is passed, per LLCHD's Food Establishment Requirements checklist. A reinspection fee of $55.00 applies; a $250.00 filing fee applies to an appeal of the code official's decision.
Sign Permit
The City's Permanent, Mobile, or Inflatable Signs page publishes its 'Fees and Inspection' table for the per-sign permit only as an image, and the per-sign fee is not published in text on that page; contact Building & Safety at 402-441-7521 for the current amount. The same page states a $50.00 annual Sign Contractor Registration fee, but that fee is paid by the licensed sign company a business hires (bonded and insured), not by the business itself, so it is disclosed here as context rather than as the permit fee. A business owner who owns a mobile or inflatable sign placed on their own property may apply for their own permit; mobile signs are capped at 60 days per calendar year and inflatable signs at 10 days (each inflatable day counting as 6 days against the mobile allowance), permitted only in B, H and I zoning districts.
Plumbing, Electrical and Mechanical Trade Contractor Registration
Lincoln licenses each skilled trade individually: plumbing (including gas fitting and water conditioning), electrical, and mechanical/HVAC, each with the published fee figures above. The Building & Safety Division's Contractor Bond, Insurance, and Registration Requirements page lists insurance requirements for demolition, electrical, excavation, fire, house moving, HVAC, plumbing, sign and street-use contractors and names no general building-contractor license comparable to Omaha's five-tier Building Contractor license. Electrical registration here is layered on top of the Nebraska State Electrical Division's state-level license. Plumbing registrations must be renewed between March 1 and May 31 each year or the license is revoked, requiring re-examination. Master and Journeyman plumbers also need continuing-education hours (10 and 6, respectively) before renewal.
