About each permit

Fire-Rescue Operational / Life-Safety Inspection

Every commercial or multi-residential occupancy in Broward needs a life-safety/fire inspection, but which agency performs it depends on location and that map is currently changing. BSO Fire Rescue's Fire Prevention Bureau serves unincorporated Broward plus a named group of contract cities — Cooper City, Dania Beach, Deerfield Beach, Hallandale Beach, Hillsboro Beach, Lauderdale Lakes, Pembroke Park, West Park and Weston — while other cities, including Fort Lauderdale, run their own independent fire department and Office of the Fire Marshal instead. On September 23, 2026 the Broward County Commission voted unanimously, 9-0, to end BSO's management of county fire-rescue when the current contract runs out in 2028, converting roughly 900 BSO Fire Rescue employees into direct Broward County employees; the county specifically named Cooper City, Weston and Dania Beach as fire agreements it is assuming, and Sheriff Gregory Tony publicly objected to the vote. Separately, and outside that county-level vote, Deerfield Beach's own BSO fire contract already expired in September 2025: a 24-month transition began, the Deerfield Beach City Commission voted 4-1 on January 21, 2026 to build standalone police and fire departments, BSO continues serving the city through September 2027, and the city's own target for independent fire operations is Fall 2027 — an earlier version of this research incorrectly said spring 2027, corrected here. Confirm the current fire-code authority for a given address before relying on a single fire-prevention contact, and expect this list to keep changing through 2028.
