About each permit
Motor Vehicle Repair Shop License
Any person or entity performing motor vehicle repair for compensation in Broward County — including motorcycles and RVs — must obtain and maintain this license, countywide, and the shop must employ at least one ASE-certified (or approved equivalent) technician per licensed repair category. §20-176.77 states that the fee is set by a separate administrative order or resolution of the County Administrator or Board of County Commissioners, not as a fixed dollar figure written into the ordinance, so the Code text states no amount; contact the Consumer Protection Division directly for the currently effective figure. The license year runs October 1 through September 30. This requirement is separate from, and in addition to, the disclosure requirements of the state Motor Vehicle Repair Act (Fla. Stat. Ch. 559, Part IX), and is also distinct from the Motor Vehicle Body Repair and Paint Shop License recorded as a separate requirement, which runs on a different annual cycle.
Motor Vehicle Body Repair and Paint Shop License
This is a distinct license from the Motor Vehicle Repair Shop License, administered by the same Consumer Protection Division under a different code division (Div. 3, not Div. 4): any person or entity performing vehicle body repair or painting for compensation as a regular business in Broward County must be licensed and must maintain at least one certified body or paint technician before advertising or opening, on top of, or instead of, the general repair license depending on the services actually offered. Like the general repair license, the fee here is set outside the Code: §20-176.43 states the fee is set by a separate administrative order or resolution of the County Administrator or Commission, not as a fixed dollar figure in the code; contact the Consumer Protection Division for the current amount. The license year for this license runs January 1 through December 31 — a different cycle than the general repair license's October-September year, a compliance trap worth flagging for any shop that holds both licenses at once.
Secondhand Dealer Registration
A retail business that buys or sells secondhand or used goods — not general new-merchandise retail — needs to register as a secondhand dealer, enforced by the Sheriff in unincorporated Broward or by municipal police inside a city. The state framework is confirmed: Florida Statutes Chapter 538, Part I requires a $6 per-location registration fee, and Florida Department of Revenue guidance confirms Broward adopts that chapter 'in addition to more restrictive provisions set forth in county ordinances.' An earlier citation for Broward's own county-level ordinance text, 'Chapter 20, Article V, §§20-127 through 20-138,' is not the current text: Municode lists that entire article as reserved, a Pawnbrokers article repealed by Ordinance 89-11 in 1989. The county's own substantive secondhand-dealer provisions most likely sit in Chapter 20, Article VII (the Consumer Protection Code) instead, and this requirement cites that article generally rather than repeating the stale Article V section numbers. Confirm any county-level amount beyond the $6 state fee with the enforcing agency.
Restaurant / Coffee Shop Food-Safety Permit — State Preemption under Fla. Stat. §509.032 (Broward)
No fee applies at the county level. Under Fla. Stat. §509.032(7)(a), the regulation of public food service establishments, 'including, but not limited to, sanitation standards, inspections, training and testing of personnel,' is preempted to the state, so food-service licensing and inspection for restaurants and coffee shops sits with the state DBPR Division of Hotels and Restaurants (or FDACS for retail food stores), not county health or consumer-protection departments; the same subsection preserves local inspections for Florida Building Code and Fire Prevention Code compliance. Broward's own Consumer Protection Division publishes a regulated-category list — auto repair, motor vehicle body/paint, movers, towing, chauffeurs/vehicles-for-hire, childcare — that does not include restaurants. A restaurant or coffee shop in Broward still needs the standard commercial requirements recorded as separate requirements, such as the Local Business Tax Receipt and, in unincorporated Broward, the Certificate of Use; under §509.032(7)(a) there is no separate county food-safety permit on top of the state DBPR license.
Food Truck Permits — State Preemption under Fla. Stat. §509.102 (Broward)
No fee applies at the county level for food-safety licensing. Florida Statutes §509.102 preempts local licensing of mobile food dispensing vehicles to the state: a county or municipality may not require a license, registration, permit or fee for a food truck beyond the state license (§509.241) and state fee (§509.251) that DBPR already administers, so under that statute Broward may not require a separate county food-safety or operating permit for food trucks. What Broward can still require of a food truck is zoning and location compliance — a fixed commissary or home base likely needs its own Certificate of Use and Local Business Tax Receipt, recorded as separate requirements — plus fire-safety compliance for LP-gas or propane equipment through whichever fire authority covers that location, and ordinary noise and operating-hours rules. None of those carve-outs amounts to a food-safety permit; confirm any related fee with the office that administers it.
