About each permit
Commercial Cooking Fire-Extinguishing System Permit
Any commercial kitchen with a hood suppression system needs this, which makes it among the least avoidable fire costs a Dallas restaurant carries. At $250 it is $120 cheaper than the equivalent Austin kitchen hood test at $370. Re-inspections escalate steeply: $171 for the first, $200 for the second, and $255 for the third and each one after.
Candles and Open Flames Permit
$230 for candles or open flame on the premises — table candles and flambe service both fall inside it. Austin charges $300 for the same thing. A separate Torch and Open Flame permit is $275, and LP-gas demonstration or portable cooking is $160 from a cart or $195 from a vehicle.
Mobile Food Preparation Vehicle Permit
$205 from Dallas Fire-Rescue for a mobile food preparation vehicle, separate from the state DSHS mobile food unit permit and from any city health permit. Austin's equivalent fire inspection is $222, or $592 if carried out on site.
High-Risk Occupancy Certificate of Registration
A certificate of registration for a high-risk occupancy is $280, plus an inspection charge set by building type and size. For public assembly the inspection is $225 under 5,000 square feet, $200 from 5,000 to 9,999, $255 from 10,000 to 59,999, $330 from 60,000 to 99,999, and $365 at 100,000 and above — note the schedule prices the smallest band higher than the next one up, which is the city's own figure and not a transcription error on our part. Hazardous materials occupancies run from $385 to $535 on the same size ladder, high-rise office, storage or assembly from $350 to $550, and health care facilities from $335 to $580.
Flammable and Combustible Liquids Permit
$450 a year, and one of the larger recurring fire permits. A workshop storing solvents, fuels or waste oil above threshold quantities needs it. Related annual permits on the same schedule: spray painting or dipping $335, welding, cutting and hot works $400, compressed gas filling, storage or use $170, and waste handling $280.
Spray Painting and Dipping Permit
$335 for a spray booth or dipping operation. A body shop will usually need this alongside the flammable and combustible liquids permit at $450 and, where torch work is done, welding, cutting and hot works at $400 — roughly $1,185 a year in fire permits before any inspection charge.
Refrigeration Equipment Permit
$245 a year where refrigeration equipment exceeds the fire code thresholds — walk-in cold rooms and larger refrigerant charges rather than a domestic-scale fridge. Confirm applicability with Dallas Fire-Rescue before budgeting for it, since small premises fall below the trigger.
State Licensed Facility Fire Inspection (Child Care)
$290 a year for a facility with 35 children or fewer and $420 for 36 or more. Related annual state licensed facility inspections on the same schedule: residential care $350, a foster home with five children or fewer $50, small assisted living $640, and adult day care $700.
High Pile Storage Permit
$490 a year for high piled combustible storage — racking above the fire code height threshold, which catches a lot of retail stockrooms and small warehouses. Dallas also charges a separate high piled combustible storage plan review through Planning and Development at $375, or $500 where hazardous materials are involved.
