About each permit

Retail Food Permit

Banded by gross annual volume of food sales: $258 up to $49,999.99; $515 from $50,000 to $149,999.99; $773 at $150,000 and above. The same three bands cover initial applications, renewals and change of ownership. A minor amendment costs $125, $250 or $375 on the same bands. Late renewal adds $100. For comparison, Austin uses identical sales bands but charges $309, $618 and $927 — Dallas is cheaper at every tier.

Temporary Retail Food Establishment Permit

$52 for a single event, per food booth or unit, valid 14 consecutive days. $200 for a multiple-event permit, valid one year from the first event, with each event limited to 14 consecutive days. Applications must reach the department at least 30 days before the event — the deadline, not the fee, is what catches operators out.

Food Establishment Inspection Fee

$150 per inspection and $150 per re-inspection. Applies where an independent school district cafeteria requires two inspections a year, or where a non-profit applies for an inspection. Dallas does not accept payments in the field, and all fees are non-refundable.
