A business based outside Fort Smith that operates within city limits must still obtain this same license. About each permit
City of Fort Smith Business License (Occupational Registration)
Required of any corporation, non-profit, LLC, LLP, association or sole proprietor, of anyone holding a state or federal license or a sales/use tax permit, of landlords of commercial, industrial or institutional property, of government entities and of home-based businesses, according to the City's Apply for a Business License page. That page marks religious institutions, educational institutions, 501(c)(3) nonprofits and insurance agencies as paying no general fee, and requires a separate license for each physical location inside city limits. The City's Apply for a Business License page and Business License FAQs do not state whether the Home Occupation and Accessory Residential Use categories renew at their original flat fee or at the standard $100 rate; contact the Business License Specialist at 479-784-2299. Food-establishment permitting for restaurants and coffee shops is handled separately by the Arkansas Department of Health through the Sebastian County Health Unit, not by this license, and is recorded at the state layer.
Zoning Verification
The City's own 'Check My Zoning' page is simply a redirect to a free, self-service GIS zoning map tool (gisapps.fortsmithar.gov) — so no fee applies for a basic zoning check, unlike Fayetteville's priced $83 Zoning Verification Letter. For a formal written determination, a business can instead contact the Planning Division directly at 479-784-2216.
Child Care Facility Local Permit — City of Fort Smith position
A day care centre in Fort Smith holds the City Business License like any other business. The City's Apply for a Business License page sorts applications by physical location, mobile food truck, home-based or temporary operation and names no separate child care license category and no separate fee. The Fire Department's Business Safety Inspection Checklist describes the basic life safety items examined in a typical business inspection (exits, emergency lighting, extinguishers, alarm and sprinkler systems) and names no daycare-specific classification or fee. The Arkansas DHS child care license is recorded at the state layer.
Salon/Barbershop Licensing — State Board License Applies (Fort Smith)
A salon or barbershop holds the standard City Business License: according to the City's Business License FAQs, the first year is free to new business owners and the annual renewal is $100.00 for typical business licenses. The City's Apply for a Business License page names no separate salon or barbershop license category and no separate fee. A salon still needs the state cosmetology establishment license and, for a barbershop, the Arkansas Board of Barber Examiners registration recorded at the state layer.
Mobile Food Vendor Permit (Food Truck)
This is a City permit in addition to, not instead of, the Arkansas Department of Health's food service establishment and mobile food unit permits recorded at the state layer. A vendor operating on public street right-of-way needs $1,000,000/$2,000,000 commercial general liability insurance naming the City as additional insured, may only use parallel parking spaces, is limited to 9 p.m.–2 a.m. hours of operation, and is barred from residential zoning districts, from within 300 feet of a school in session, and — within the Commercial Downtown (C-6) district specifically — from sixteen separately enumerated locations (near hydrants, crosswalks, disabled-parking ramps, other food-service entrances, and the public rights-of-way of five named state-highway corridors through downtown). A vendor on private property instead needs a signed Landlord Permission Sheet and no insurance filing. The City's own FAQ describes this same product simply as a '$150.00 annually' Food Truck renewal.
Auto Repair Licensing — City Business License Applies (Fort Smith)
An auto repair shop holds the standard City Business License: according to the City's Business License FAQs, the first year is free to new business owners and the annual renewal is $100.00 for typical business licenses. The City's Apply for a Business License page sorts applications by whether the business has a physical location in the city, is a mobile food truck, is run from home, or operates 90 days or less, and names no separate auto-repair license category and no separate fee.
