What does a contractor or trade need in Sarasota County that other businesses do not?

2 of the 2 permits particular to a contractor or trade here apply to no other business type we cover in Sarasota County: Sarasota County Certificate of Competency and Contractors Operating Certificate and Contractor License.

Sarasota County Certificate of Competency and Contractors Operating Certificate

County Code s. 22-122 makes it unlawful to contract in the listed categories unless the person, firm or corporation holds an active Sarasota County Operating Certificate in addition to an applicable Sarasota County Certificate of Competency, plus any state registration or certification Florida Statutes require. Section 22-123(1) requires Operating Certificates or State Certified Contractor licenses of all contractors governed by Fla. Stat. Ch. 489, Parts I and II, and Ch. 633. Under s. 22-123(2), holders of a county Certificate of Competency request an Operating Certificate and pay the regulatory fee, and the certificate runs for two years from October 1 of even-numbered years. The county Licensing FAQ (Form LIC20, Rev. 04/14/2026) states that contractor license numbers beginning with an R or S are regulated by the county, that applicants take a trade exam and a business and law exam (a journeyman takes the trade exam only), and that financial responsibility is assessed.

Contractor License

The two routes cost the same to keep and differ sharply at entry: certification is $335 for application and examination, registration is $100. What you get differs too — a certified license works anywhere in Florida, while a registered one is valid only where you hold local competency approval, so the cheaper route can cost more in practice if you work across county lines. Qualifying a business organisation is a separate license again at $50, with its own $50 biennial renewal, and it is the piece most often missed. An inactive license renews at $50. Letting a license go null and void costs $100 to reinstate, and a delinquency fee is $25.

The other 3 local permits in the tables apply to every type of business in Sarasota County, FL; what each one involves is set out on the Sarasota County permits page. The 6 state-level registrations apply to every type of business across FL and are covered on the FL state page.
