What does a contractor or trade need in Manatee County that other businesses do not?

3 of the 3 permits particular to a contractor or trade here apply to no other business type we cover in Manatee County: Local Contractor Certificate of Competency (masonry, concrete, garage door; journeyman plumber or electrician), Registration of a State-Certified Contractor License and Contractor License.

Local Contractor Certificate of Competency (masonry, concrete, garage door; journeyman plumber or electrician)

Code §2-6-73(a) requires anyone who constructs or advertises construction services in Manatee County to hold either a Manatee County certificate of competency or a State of Florida certified license. The county's FAQ states: “Manatee County issues and reciprocates Local Licenses for the following Trades: Mason; Masonry and Concrete; Garage Door Specialty Contractor; Concrete; Journeyman Electric; Journeyman Plumbing,” and that all local licenses in unincorporated Manatee County are subject to Construction Trades Board approval and testing if applicable. The fees are from Exhibit A to Resolution R-23-043 (adopted February 28, 2023, effective April 1, 2023, amended April 21, 2026). Under §2-6-76(b) certificates expire September 30 each year, and a holder who has not renewed before December 1 must apply for a new certificate. Section 2-6-73(b) lists the application evidence, and §2-6-76(h)-(i) requires the license number in every advertising medium and on service vehicles. Contact the Licensing Section at (941) 748-4501 x3574 or licensing@mymanatee.org.

Registration of a State-Certified Contractor License

Code §2-6-76(e) recognises a Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board certification as a valid license in its category within Manatee County upon proof of workers' compensation and general liability insurance, and §2-6-76(f) states that state certified contractors “will register their license in the online portal and will provide proof of certification and the proof of insurance required.” The county's Register Your Contractor License page states that state certified contractors “have the option of registering their state certified license with us to work in unincorporated Manatee County.” The same page states: “We do not Reciprocate Registered Contractors.”

Contractor License

The two routes cost the same to keep and differ sharply at entry: certification is $335 for application and examination, registration is $100. What you get differs too — a certified license works anywhere in Florida, while a registered one is valid only where you hold local competency approval, so the cheaper route can cost more in practice if you work across county lines. Qualifying a business organisation is a separate license again at $50, with its own $50 biennial renewal, and it is the piece most often missed. An inactive license renews at $50. Letting a license go null and void costs $100 to reinstate, and a delinquency fee is $25.

The other 7 local permits in the tables apply to every type of business in Manatee County, FL; what each one involves is set out on the Manatee County permits page. The 6 state-level registrations apply to every type of business across FL and are covered on the FL state page.
