About each permit

Leon County Registration for State Certified Contractors

Leon County Code Sec. 5-3.02 requires anyone who wants to engage in business as a contractor for buildings or structures under the Florida Building Code to provide their Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation contractor's license and number first, and Sec. 5-3.03 lets the building department issue building permits only to holders of a DBPR contractor's license, except a bona fide homeowner working on their own single-family or two-family dwelling. The county's Code Compliance Services page states: "Effective July 1, 2023, all contractors shall have a state-issued certified contractor license to perform work in Leon County." State-certified contractors register with the county on the Leon County Registration for State Certified Contractors form, headed "Leon County Contractors' Licensing and Examination Board", giving the business name and state license number and attaching an authorized agent form, an Accela user declaration, a copy of the state certified license, workers' compensation coverage or exemption, and a general liability certificate sent directly by the insurer naming Leon County, 435 N Macomb St, 2nd Floor, as certificate holder. Documents go to the DSEM Licensing Program by email (DSEM_Licensing@LeonCountyfl.gov) or fax (850-606-1301). The Code Compliance page adds that staff verify contractors' and subcontractors' licenses, workers' compensation and general liability before issuing permits.
