About each permit
Street Vendor License (Food/Peddler/Hawker)
A separate, ordinance-backed license from the Building Department's Permit & License Center, additional to (not a substitute for) the Health Department's Itinerant Vendor Food Service license recorded above. Required documentation includes a valid Connecticut sales tax permit, a criminal background check, and — for a food cart or truck — a valid health certificate from NHV Health. The Fire Marshal must inspect every food vendor's conveyance, and a separate Parks Department permit is required to vend inside a city park. Vending is barred in all residential zoning districts, on the New Haven Green, on school grounds, and within specific 'Special Vending' congestion areas (Cedar/York Streets, Sachem/Prospect Streets, Long Wharf, the Gateway district, and Grand Avenue) without additional permission.
