A fee-schedule page exists for the neighboring Etowah County Health Department, within the same ADPH district, but each county department in the district sets and publishes its own schedule rather than sharing a district-wide figure, so Etowah's amounts do not apply to Calhoun. About each permit

Onsite Sewage (Septic) System Permit to Install or Repair

ADPH Rule 420-3-1-.05(1) states that no person shall occupy, rent, lease, sell, possess, or allow a building to be occupied as a dwelling or establishment unless it has an approved sewage disposal system, and Rule 420-3-1-.06(1) states that no person shall begin installing or repairing an onsite sewage system, or any component, until a valid Permit to Install (Repair) has been issued by the local health department. The Calhoun County Health Department (an ADPH Northeastern District office; Environmental Department (256) 237-4324) lists 'Onsite Sewage Application and Permits, Septic Tanks, and Grease Trap Permits' and 'Small and Large Flow Development Permits' among its services on its Environmental Services page (last updated August 20, 2025). The page prints no fee. The permit applies only where the business premises are served by a septic or other onsite system rather than a public sewer; a business connected to a city or utility sewer has no onsite sewage permit.

Grease Trap Requirement and Permit (Onsite Sewage Sites)

ADPH Rule 420-3-1-.22(1), part of the onsite sewage rules, states that any establishment using commercial kitchen equipment shall install a grease trap complying with Rule 420-3-1-.17, unless the local health department determines that the establishment produces little grease waste; the trap must sit outside the building where it can be inspected, pumped and maintained. The Calhoun County Health Department's Environmental Services page (last updated August 20, 2025; (256) 237-4324) lists 'Grease Trap Permits' with its onsite sewage permits. Because the rule is part of the onsite sewage chapter, it applies to a restaurant, coffee shop or childcare kitchen with commercial kitchen equipment on a site served by an onsite sewage system. The page prints no fee.

Food Service Establishment Health Permit

A restaurant, coffee shop, food truck or childcare facility that prepares or serves food in Calhoun County needs an annual food service permit from the Calhoun County Health Department, which operates as a plain Alabama Department of Public Health field office under the agency's Northeastern District, not as an independently run county health department like Jefferson's or Mobile's. Inspections use ADPH's standard 100-point scoring: an establishment scoring 85 or above is reinspected within 120 days, and one scoring below 85 is reinspected within 60 days; permits expire every September 30. The department has never published a dollar fee for this permit on its own site, and Wayback Machine's archive index confirms no fee-schedule page has ever existed for Calhoun at that address, unlike some neighboring ADPH-district counties that do publish their own schedules. Call the department's Environmental Services line, (256) 237-4324, to get the figure currently charged before applying. A separate site, calhouncountyhealth.net, appears in general searches for a Calhoun County health department but belongs to Calhoun County, Illinois, and has no connection to this Alabama county or its permit.
