How much does it actually cost to permit a childcare centre in Nassau County?
There is no single figure, and any site quoting one is rounding away the part that matters. Of the 14 records listed for a childcare centre in Nassau County, NY, 2 apply to every business of this type and 12 are conditional. Swimming Pool and Bathing Beach Operating Permit: Per the county's 2012 published fee schedule — the same document that also carries the Food Service Establishment fees: seasonal pool up to 5,000 sq ft $535, over 5,000 sq ft $750; annual pool up to 4,000 sq ft $970, over 4,000 sq ft $1,315; bathing beach $345; plus a $150 non-refundable application fee; plan-review fees are $1,500 for a new pool and $500 for a renovation. Confirm the current amounts with the Department of Health.
The other 1 variable fee belongs to permits that apply to every type of business here; its formula is set out on the Nassau County permits page and the NY state page.

What does a childcare centre need in Nassau County that other businesses do not?
3 of the 4 permits particular to a childcare centre here apply to no other business type we cover in Nassau County: Child Care Licensing — State License Applies (Nassau County), Food Service Establishment Permit — Day Care Exemption under 10 NYCRR 14-1.190(g) (Nassau County) and Child Day Care Centre License.
Child Care Licensing — State License Applies (Nassau County)
The New York State Office of Children and Family Services licenses and registers child day care programs; its provider page states that, as a general rule, a program serving three or more children for more than three hours a day on a regular basis must obtain a license or registration. The Department of Consumer Affairs' Licensing & Registrations page lists no childcare category, so there is no county childcare license fee. The county's own Day Care page describes the Nassau County Department of Social Services, at 60 Charles Lindbergh Blvd, Suite 160, Uniondale, as taking childcare subsidy applications through its Day Care New Applications unit, and directs anyone wanting resource-and-referral information or a list of day care providers to a nonprofit, the Child Care Council of Nassau County. A licensed day care center serving its own enrolled children in-house also needs no separate Food Service Establishment permit from the county, under the categorical exemption recorded separately for Nassau County — the permit only attaches if a third-party caterer runs the center's food service instead of center staff.
Swimming Pool and Bathing Beach Operating Permit
A fitness studio or gym operating a swimming pool, and a childcare facility with an on-site pool, need a Nassau County Department of Health operating permit for it, filed at least 30 days before the permit expires or, for a new pool, before it opens. The 2012 fee schedule — dated August 1, 2012, the same document cited for the Food Service Establishment fees — prices a seasonal pool up to 5,000 square feet at $535 and a larger seasonal pool at $750, an annual pool up to 4,000 square feet at $970 and a larger annual pool at $1,315, and a bathing beach at $345, on top of a flat $150 non-refundable application fee. Plan review for a new pool is $1,500 and for a pool renovation is $500. A facility with no pool, spa or beach has no obligation under this record.
Food Service Establishment Permit — Day Care Exemption under 10 NYCRR 14-1.190(g) (Nassau County)
Under NYS Sanitary Code §14-1.190(g), no fee applies and no separate Food Service Establishment permit is required when a licensed day care center serves food to its own enrolled children in-house — this is a categorical exemption, not a quantity or frequency threshold. NYS Sanitary Code §14-1.190(g) states plainly that day care centers approved to operate by the state (now the Office of Children and Family Services, successor to the Department of Social Services named in the rule's text) 'do not require a separate permit for food service operations unless such operations are conducted by a third party.' The regulation states no seat count, meal count or hours-of-operation limit: a center feeding its own children stays exempt regardless of volume. The exemption flips the moment a third-party caterer or vendor runs the food service instead of center staff — at that point the third-party operator, not the childcare center, is responsible for applying for and holding its own Food Service Establishment permit from the Nassau County Department of Health.
Child Day Care Centre License
Under New York Social Services Law §390 and 18 NYCRR Part 418-1, which contain no fee provision for a child day care centre license, there is no license fee — unusual against states charging into four figures. No official page states this in words, so no amount is recorded. The license runs up to four years, and from 5 June 2027 that becomes up to six. New York City is a different regime entirely: group child care there is permitted by the city health department under Article 47 of the city Health Code, for a two-year term with a $200 application fee. A centre caring for six or fewer children falls outside this license.
The other 5 local permits in the tables apply to every type of business in Nassau County, NY; what each one involves is set out on the Nassau County permits page. The 5 state-level registrations apply to every type of business across NY and are covered on the NY state page.
How does a childcare centre compare with other businesses in Nassau County?

A childcare centre also needs Child Care Licensing — State License Applies (Nassau County), Food Service Establishment Permit — Day Care Exemption under 10 NYCRR 14-1.190(g) (Nassau County) and Child Day Care Centre License. A fitness studio needs Health Club Operator License, which a childcare centre does not.
