What this agency issues
| Permit | Issuing agency | Fee | Renews | Last checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General Business License | City of West Jordan Finance Department, Business Licensing Division | A single flat 'Business' category, expressly captioned 'not to exceed $2,000' on the fee schedule: a $163/year base fee plus $8/year per employee (capped in total at $2,000), plus a separate one-time, nonrefundable $55 application fee. This is the only category that applies to nine of the ten industries covered here — the fee schedule's other named Business Licensing categories (Home Occupation, Alcohol Licensing, Pawn Shops, Rental Dwelling Units, Solicitor, Sexually Oriented Business, Vending Machine, and Vendor License) do not match a restaurant, retailer, contractor, childcare centre, salon, fitness studio, veterinary clinic or ordinary auto-repair shop; a food truck is the one exception, recorded separately below. | annual — a 'license year' runs twelve consecutive calendar months from the date of commencement (not a calendar year), per Municipal Code § 4-1B-17; expires no later than 120 days after continuous closure of the business per § 4-1B-30 | 2026-09-09 |
| Business License Fee Exemption for Non-Resident Building Contractorsonly if it applies to you | City of West Jordan Finance Department, Business Licensing Division | A building contractor with no retail product sales and no actual business location within West Jordan city limits is exempt from the business-license fee entirely (though must still apply for and hold the license). A contractor who operates a construction business from a home located within the city is expressly carved out of this exemption and owes the full base license fee ($163/year plus $8/year per employee) like any other business. No separate West Jordan contractor exam, registration card, or bond beyond proof of an active Utah DOPL contractor license was found. | not applicable — this is a fee exemption on the General Business License, not a separate license | 2026-09-09 |
| Vendor License — Food Truck | City of West Jordan Finance Department, Business Licensing Division | Food Truck: $178/year, plus a separate Food Truck Secondary Permit at $21. This is distinct from the fee schedule's own 'Large Vendor' ($249) and 'Small Vendor' ($182) categories, which read as covering non-food mobile vendors rather than food trucks specifically. | annual — same 12-consecutive-month license year as the General Business License | 2026-09-09 |
Fees shown as a range or formula are set that way by the issuing agency — we do not average them into a single number.
About each permit
General Business License
Mandatory for any person engaging in business within city limits (Ord. 23-25, § 4-1B-1). Zoning, Building & Safety and Fire Department sign-off are all required before a license issues, per the city's own Commercial Business License checklist. A building contractor with no retail sales and no actual business location in the city is exempt from paying this fee (though must still apply) under § 4-1B-19.A — see the separate contractor record below for the full condition. Insurance companies paying state license fees and nonprofit/charitable organizations are also fee-exempt under the same section. The city's own checklist still lists a $53 application fee, which is stale — the current fee schedule's $55 figure is used here.
Business License Fee Exemption for Non-Resident Building Contractors
Read directly from the city's own signed ordinance (Ord. 23-25). A contractor should confirm with Business Licensing (801-569-5010) whether a given job site or arrangement qualifies as having 'no actual business location within city limits' before assuming the exemption applies.
Vendor License — Food Truck
This is the city's own license to operate the vehicle as a business. It is required on top of both the Salt Lake County Health Department's separate Mobile Food Service Permit (food-safety side, recorded below) and the West Jordan Fire Department's own Food Truck / Mobile Food Vendor inspection fee (recorded below) — a West Jordan food truck operator faces three separate fee-bearing touchpoints across three different agencies.
