About each permit

Weights and Measures Location License (Lake County Weights & Measures Department)

Lake County Ord. 1264D Section 8(A) states: "A license shall be required at any location using an instrument or engaged in the buying, selling, bartering or exchanging of goods or commodities." It adds that locations selling, bartering or exchanging packaged food items enclosed in a container or wrapper in advance of retail sale also need a license, that a license is valid for the calendar year and is not transferable, and (Section 8(B)) that a person doing business at two or more locations obtains a separate license for each. The ordinance defines "Person" to include one engaged in the buying, selling, bartering or exchanging of goods or commodities "within the County". As set in Lake County Code § 110.08(B), as amended by Ord. 1264D-1 (signed September 14, 2010, raising the fee from $100) and Ord. 1264D-2 (passed June 10, 2025), the license fee is $140 per location, payable by check, money order or credit card (2.45% card fee, $1.49 minimum), with a new application for each location. The department's License Fee Schedule prorates a new business's fee to $105, $70 or $35 by quarter, and sets farm stands and seasonal businesses open three months or less at $35. The license must be posted conspicuously; § 110.99(H) fines failure to possess or post it $200 plus $100 for each year. Weights & Measures: (219) 755-3680.
