About each permit
Fire Plan Review Fee
Charged whenever plans requiring fire-code review are submitted; where plans are incomplete or changed so as to require additional review, a further $30/hour applies. This is a separate, Fire-Department-administered fee from the Department of Public Works' own 35%-of-permit-fee Building Plan Review Fee listed above. For comparison, Honolulu's Fire Plans Review fee is 10% of the building permit fee.
Flammable Finishes / Spray Booth Permit
Required for the installation or modification of any spray room, spray booth, or preparation work station, or to conduct a spraying or dipping operation utilizing flammable or combustible liquids or powder coating — the situation an auto-body or auto-repair shop with a paint booth would face — confirmed directly and currently at $100 each in the Department of Fire and Public Safety's own fee ordinance. This is a one-time, per-installation fee, unlike the annual fee for the equivalent permit in Hawaii County and Honolulu.
Fire Prevention Permit — Assembly Occupancy
Required to operate an assembly occupancy with an occupant load of 300 or more persons in a permitted structure, confirmed at $100/year directly from both the current Appendix B ordinance and the Fire Prevention Bureau's own current 'FD Assembly' page. The same Fire Department fee section also prices compressed-gas storage, explosive materials, flammable/combustible liquid tanks, liquefied petroleum gas tanks, and tents/temporary structures over 700 sq ft, each at $100-$200 — not listed as separate records here because they depend on project-specific equipment not every business installs.
Fire Protection Permit (Automatic Suppression Systems, incl. Commercial Kitchen Hood Suppression)
The Fire Prevention Bureau's own current 'FD Fire Protection Permit' page prices installation, modification, renovation, or removal of 'fire sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, water tank, private service main, fire hydrants and fire lines, fire pumps, automatic suppression systems, or fire alarm and detection systems' not associated with an active Building Permit at $100 per system. Unlike Honolulu's and Hawaii County's fire pages, this page does not separately name 'commercial cooking equipment' or 'hood suppression.' A commercial-kitchen automatic fire-extinguishing (hood suppression) system would fall within the page's generic 'automatic suppression systems' category; confirm with the Fire Prevention Bureau before relying on that. Where the system is installed as part of an active building permit, its review is instead folded into the Building Plan Review Fee and Fire Plan Review Fee listed separately.
