About each permit
Fire Permit — Places of Assembly
Required only for a place of assembly with an occupant load of three hundred or more people. Ordinance No. 1167 (Bill No. 2938), which adopted the 2021 State Fire Code for Kaua'i with local amendments, states: 'The operation of a place of assembly requires an annual permit. The annual permit fee is $50.00.' Its amendment to Section 20.1.1.1 sets the threshold: 'A permit is required for places of assembly with an occupant load capacity of three hundred (300) or more persons, such as restaurants, nightclubs, dancing, and drinking establishments.' The ordinance took effect sixty days after the Mayor approved it in January 2025. The same fee section prices tents and canopies at $30.00 and the application of flammable finishes at $50.00 a year. A restaurant, gym or store with an occupant load below three hundred does not need this permit. Apply through the Prevention Bureau at (808) 241-4985 or kfdpreventionbureau@kauai.gov.
Fire Permit — Application of Flammable Finishes (Spray Booth)
The permit an auto body or repair shop with a paint booth needs. Ordinance No. 1167 (Bill No. 2938), the County's 2025 Fire Code amendments, lists 'Application of Flammable Finishes. Annual permit fee: 50.00,' with permit requirements in the Fire Code's Section 43.1.1.4. It is an annual permit rather than a one-time installation fee. The ordinance took effect sixty days after the Mayor approved it in January 2025. Apply through the Prevention Bureau at (808) 241-4985 or kfdpreventionbureau@kauai.gov.
