About each permit
Retail Food Facility Permit
Environmental Health Services' food program page states: 'We permit all retail food businesses in the County of Marin.' Its 'Food program fees' page states that 'An annual operating permit fee is required for all food businesses.' County Code §7.24.030(a) makes it unlawful to operate a food establishment 'within the unincorporated area of Marin County without a valid permit issued by the county health officer', and requires the permit to be displayed prominently at the place of business; §7.24.055 applies the chapter's fees in any area where the health officer enforces state health rules, 'whether that area is incorporated or unincorporated.' Under §7.24.050(a) the fees are those the Board of Supervisors establishes by resolution. Environmental Health Services' mobile food facility page states that approval of the MFF plans by its office 'is required before applying for a permit to operate', that 'A fee to review the MFF plans is required', and that the application is submitted 'along with the annual operating permit fee.' The same page states that the approval process 'can take 15 business days or longer', that after a successful inspection the operator receives a permit sticker to display on the vehicle, and that before starting an MFF the operator 'must contact all the cities where you want to sell your food', since each city may have different rules. County Code §7.24.030(a) requires the permit of a mobile food facility to be carried by the driver. The page states that applications must be submitted a minimum of 10 working days before the start day of the event 'to avoid late fees', and that a vendor at a temporary community event submits the application to the event organizer, who submits all applications to Environmental Health Services for permitting. Body Art Facility Permit and Practitioner Registration
This applies to a salon only if it offers tattooing, body piercing or permanent cosmetics; a salon without those services has no body art permit. County Code §7.26.010 states that the chapter implements the Safe Body Art Act, which regulates 'persons engaged in the business of tattooing, body piercing, and the application of permanent cosmetics' and requires annual registration of body art practitioners and annual health permits for body art facilities. Under Chapter 7.26 the practitioner registration and the facility permit each run one year from issuance, and the fees are those established by the Board of Supervisors by resolution. The amounts above are as published on the Environmental Health Services fee page (page updated December 11, 2024), headed 'Body art permit fees - effective July 1, 2019'; the page adds that 'Fees are subject to change.' This applies to a fitness studio only if it operates a public swimming pool or spa; a studio without a pool has no pool permit. County Code §7.40.030 makes it unlawful to own, operate or maintain a public swimming pool 'within the unincorporated area of Marin County without a valid permit issued by the health officer', requires the permit to be displayed next to the pool, and provides that no permit is issued until the pool has been inspected. Under §7.40.050 the fees are those established by resolution of the Board of Supervisors.
