About each permit
Dog Kennel Permit
A kennel in this code means any premises keeping four or more dogs at least four months old, so a clinic boarding four dogs overnight is on the face of it a kennel. But Animal Services publishes an express exemption, and it is the answer to the question most veterinary practices actually have: the kennel rules do not apply to a kennel operated by a veterinarian on the same premises run as a veterinary hospital and holding a valid state premises permit. All three conditions must hold — break any of them, by boarding at a separate address, by having a non-veterinarian run it, or by lapsing the state permit, and the $305 permit is due. Grooming as a side business is a separate $180 permit, and a cat kennel is $290. One caution on the code text: the department's own page says four or more cats, while the municipal code as amended says six, and the code controls.
Posting of Pet Laws
No fee and no application, but it is the one provision of the municipal code that names veterinary facilities as directly regulated, and it applies to every one in the City whether or not the kennel exemption covers them. The notice must be at least eight and a half by eleven inches and posted somewhere the public can easily see it. Added by ordinance effective 24 January 2024, so it is recent enough that older fit-out checklists miss it. Pet stores, dog and cat kennels and privately owned dog parks carry the same duty.
