| Limestone County General Privilege/Business License | Limestone County License Commissioner (Joseph Cannon) | The License Commissioner's own issuance fee is capped by statute at not more than $2 (Ala. Code §45-42-200.05). The underlying classification fee — what a business actually pays for the privilege of operating — falls back to 'the same fees... prescribed in the general law for like service' (§45-42-200.08), i.e. the statewide Title 40-12 classification schedule. The Alabama Department of Revenue's own Quick Reference Guide confirms specific classification codes apply to retail (§315), auto-repair (§54, plus possible §53/§315) and salon (§61, plus possible §69/72/176(a)-(p)/315, requiring Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering certification); a fitness-studio/gym classification is recorded separately below because it carries no Title 40-12 code of its own. | annual; licenses expire September 30, renewal required in October, penalties and interest apply after November 1 | 2026-09-28 |
| Title 40-12 Classification — Fitness Studio / Gym (Limestone County)only if it applies to you | Limestone County License Commissioner (Joseph Cannon) | No fee | not applicable — the ADOR Quick Reference Guide lists 'None' as the required Title 40-12 code section for a gym | 2026-09-28 |
| Limestone County Junkyard Licenseonly if it applies to you | Limestone County License Commissioner (Joseph Cannon) | $100–$1,000 a year, set by the County Commission within this $100-$1,000 statutory band, for a junkyard within 1,000 feet of a highway right-of-way in unincorporated Limestone County | annual, per fiscal year | 2026-09-28 |

About each permit
Limestone County General Privilege/Business License
Any person, firm or corporation engaging in business or an occupation anywhere in Limestone County — inside Athens, Ardmore, Elkmont, Mooresville or Lester, or in the unincorporated county — owes this general privilege license to the License Commissioner, an elected office (Joseph Cannon since October 2019) created by local act specifically for Limestone County in place of the county-license-commission model used elsewhere in Alabama. The Commissioner's own issuance fee is capped at $2 by §45-42-200.05, but the real cost of the license is the underlying Title 40-12 classification fee that §45-42-200.08 sends back to general state law: retail stores carry classification code §315, auto-repair shops code §54, and salons code §61 (with required Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering certification) per the Alabama Department of Revenue's own Quick Reference Guide. A business located inside Athens or another incorporated city owes this county license in addition to, not instead of, that city's own separate municipal business license. Call the License Commissioner's office, 256-233-6430, to confirm the exact classification and current dollar total for a specific business.
Title 40-12 Classification — Fitness Studio / Gym (Limestone County)
The Alabama Department of Revenue's own Quick Reference Guide (October 2022), the document Limestone's general-law fallback at §45-42-200.08 points to, lists 'None' as the required Title 40-12 code section for a gym, with §69 and §315 as possible additional code sections depending on what else the business sells. On that schedule, there is no fee for a fitness-studio-specific classification, distinct from the general county privilege license recorded above, which still applies to every business regardless of type and still carries its own $2 issuance-fee cap. A 'Health Club/Spa' offering, as a distinct listing in the same guide, may carry its own further classification codes (§69, §72, §151, §153 or §315) depending on the specific services offered — those are a different business description than a plain gym and are not covered by this record.
Limestone County Junkyard License
A junkyard within 1,000 feet of the nearest edge of a highway right-of-way, anywhere in unincorporated Limestone County, needs this local license, priced by the County Commission somewhere between $100 and $1,000 a year and administered through the License Commissioner; no license may be granted unless the yard is screened from highway view. §45-42-170.03(b) states this fee is 'in addition to the license fee required under Section 23-1-244' — a state highway-beautification junkyard-control license administered by ALDOT, a separate $25-a-year charge for a yard on or visible from the state highway system, distinct in purpose (highway aesthetics) from this county nuisance/screening license. Neither of these displaces the ordinary general county privilege license's own Title 40-12 classification fee (junk dealer/yard, code 116(a), recorded in the general privilege license record above) — the three serve three different regulatory purposes (business tax, county nuisance control, state highway control) and a junkyard business near a highway in unincorporated Limestone County can genuinely owe all three, cumulatively, to three different offices. Operating an unlicensed junkyard is a public nuisance the County Commission may pursue in Circuit Court.
