Ulster County Master Electrician License

The county's renewal form quotes Local Law No. 3 of 2019, the Ulster County Electrical Licensing Law: "No person shall engage in, carry on or conduct the business of an electrical contractor within the County of Ulster unless he or she is licensed." An electrical contractor obtains a master electrician license from the Ulster County Electrical Licensing Board after an exam. The fees vary by residency, as published in the Board's Schedule of Fees (last edited January 6, 2023, "Adopted by Local Law No. 3 of 2019 & Electrical Licensing Board's Rules and Regulations"): the application fee is $50, $75 or $100, the exam fee is $125, and the license fee is $150 for an Ulster County resident, $750 for another New York State resident and $1,500 for a non-New York State resident. Renewal requires proof of a 6-hour refresher course within the last 12 months, liability and disability insurance, workers' compensation proof or a sole-proprietor waiver, and a notarized child support affidavit. Fees are paid by check or money order to the Ulster County Commissioner of Finance.

Contractor Licensing — Local Home Improvement Licenses, No State License (New York)

The Department of State's catalogue of licensed occupations lists thirty-six license types and no general or home improvement contractor license, so there is no state contractor license fee. Home improvement licensing is instead a local matter: the Attorney General's home improvement fact sheet states that 'Home improvement contractors must be licensed in New York City, Suffolk, Nassau, Westchester, Putnam, and Rockland counties.' Outside those places, check with the county or city for any local requirement. One state-level credential does exist but is narrower than it looks — the Department of Labor's Contractor and Subcontractor Registry, mandatory since 30 December 2024 for public work and certain covered private projects, at $200 for two years or $100 for a certified minority or woman-owned business. It is a registration for bidding on public work, not permission to trade.

The 5 state-level registrations apply to every type of business across NY and are covered on the NY state page.
