How much does it actually cost to permit a salon or barber in Hamilton County In?

There is no single figure, and any site quoting one is rounding away the part that matters. Of the 13 records listed for a salon or barber in Hamilton County In, IN, 2 apply to every business of this type and 11 are conditional. Adding every fee on the page together would overstate what most operators pay, because it would include permits they never need.

Of the 2 that always apply, 2 carry a flat fee, coming to $65.00. That is a floor, not a total. 6 of the 13 are charged as a range or a formula set by the issuing agency, and 1 has no fee published at all. The ones particular to this business that vary:

Body Art Establishment and Body Artist Licenses (Hamilton County Health Department): Schedule H: fixed body art establishment license $250; body artist license $75; temporary body artist license $50; temporary body art establishment license $150; mobile body art establishment license $150. Late charge 25% of the annual fee; a body art establishment operating without a permit pays $100 plus license fees; a new establishment first opening on or after September 1 pays one-half of the annual operating fee.

The other 5 variable fees belong to permits that apply to every type of business here; their formulas are set out on the Hamilton County In permits page and the IN state page.

Which offices issue these permits in Hamilton County In?

Permits for a salon or barber in Hamilton County In, IN come from 6 separate offices: Hamilton County Health Department, Hamilton County Plan Commission (Hamilton County Planning Department), Hamilton County Highway Department, Indiana Secretary of State, Business Services Division, Indiana Professional Licensing Agency, State Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners, Indiana Department of Revenue. No single office issues them all, which is why an opening means filing in several places rather than one.

What does a salon or barber need in Hamilton County In that other businesses do not?

2 of the 3 permits particular to a salon or barber here apply to no other business type we cover in Hamilton County In: Body Art Establishment and Body Artist Licenses (Hamilton County Health Department) and Beauty Culture Salon or Barber Shop License.

Body Art Establishment and Body Artist Licenses (Hamilton County Health Department)

Hamilton County Code chapter 16-20-9, in effect January 1, 2025 (16-20-9-25), licenses body art, which 16-20-9-2 defines as "body piercing, tattooing, branding, scarification, or cosmetic tattooing". Under 16-20-9-14(b)(1) no one may operate a body art establishment except with a body art establishment license issued annually by the Hamilton County Health Department, and under 16-20-9-14(c)(1) no person may practise body art procedures without a body artist license; licenses are not transferable and must be posted in a prominent and conspicuous area. Section 16-20-9-14(b)(5) states that a jewelry retail establishment using an ear-piercing gun for earlobe piercings only does not require a license but must meet the same sanitary requirements as a body piercing facility. As set in Hamilton County Code 16-20-1-27, Health department fees (Ord. 10-14-24-B, 10-14-2024, effective January 1, 2025; Ord. 06-09-2025-A, 6-9-2025), as codified on Municode, Schedule H, a fixed establishment license costs $250, a body artist license $75, a temporary body artist license $50, and a temporary or mobile body art establishment license $150 each; the temporary establishment license covers a fixed location operating no more than 14 consecutive days. A late charge of 25% of the annual fee applies, an establishment operating without a permit pays $100 plus license fees, and one first opening on or after September 1 pays half the annual fee. A body artist applicant shows bloodborne pathogen and first aid training.

Beauty Culture Salon or Barber Shop License

Forty dollars for four years is about as cheap as a premises license gets anywhere. Indiana has one license rather than two: a barber shop is licensed as a beauty culture salon under this rule, with the words barber shop license printed on the document, and the separate barber-shop chapter that once did the job no longer exists. Both fee rules land on the same $40 in any case. Booth renters are exempt from holding one. Reinstatement is $80 and a late renewal within three years adds $50. One thing is genuinely not published: the calendar date the license expires on, which the statute delegates to the agency and which appears nowhere — the agency says only that renewal notices go out about ninety days ahead.
