Which Alaska city are you opening in?

• Anchorage, AKAnchorage is a unified home rule municipality merging city and borough functions, and it has the deepest local regulatory layer of any Alaska municipality covered on this site — it licenses food, childcare, salons and contractors itself. Its Business Licenses page nonetheless lists only the specific businesses that require a Municipal business license or permit, and AMC Title 10 enumerates the licensed activities and the Clerk issues only a short list, with the Mobile Food Service and Solicitation chapters both marked repealed. Food is the clearest divergence from the rest of Alaska. DEC's own pages establish that Anchorage is the single municipality running its own retail food programme, with DEC retaining manufacturing, processing and wholesale even inside the municipality. Anchorage Health Department food permits are risk-scored: $260.00 for Risk Type 1 at 0 to 5 points, $460.00 for Type 2 at 6 to 9 and $660.00 for Type 3 at 10 or more, with catering adding $150.00, plan review at $220.00 to $550.00 by floor area, a change of ownership at $150.00 per location and an enforcement inspection at $300.00. Childcare is municipally licensed under AMC 16.55 at $50.00 for one to eight children, $125.00 for nine to twenty, $250.00 for twenty-one to eighty and $375.00 for eighty-one or more. A salon, barber or nail shop is a $150.00 annual health permit. Contractors need a municipal license on top of the state one, at $400.00 for two years or $450.00 with a residential endorsement, expiring February 14. Commercial building permits are $350.00 up to $50,000 of valuation, then 1.2 percent of valuation with a $700.00 minimum to $1,000,000, then $12,000 plus 0.8 percent, then $44,000 plus 0.6 percent above $5,000,000. Fire inspection is base $75.00 plus an occupancy fee by floor area, with a forty percent discount where an inspection finds zero violations. Anchorage levies no general sales tax; its selective taxes are a 12 percent room tax, an 8 percent vehicle rental tax, 5 percent on alcohol and marijuana and a CPI-indexed cigarette tax at 139.2 mills per cigarette.15 published records
• Fairbanks, AKFairbanks is a home rule city inside the Fairbanks North Star Borough, and the two layers divide unusually: the City licenses business, issues building permits and inspects for fire, while the Borough does all zoning — including downtown Fairbanks — and all platting; the Borough's own FAQ states that it has not adopted a building code, so building permits are required only within the two cities inside it. Among Anchorage, Juneau and Fairbanks, Fairbanks alone has a true general business license rather than an enumerated list. FGC 14-601 requires one of every entity that holds a state business license and does business in the city, priced on prior-year gross receipts across twelve tiers: $50.00 below $50,000, $120.00 to $249,999, $350.00 to $999,999, $580.00 to $2,999,999, $1,125.00 to $9,999,999 and rising to $25,000.00 above $120,000,000, with a $1.00 optional youth license. It renews by the last day of February and a late renewal costs a further $50.00. Building permits run a valuation table from $17.00, with plan review at seventy-five percent of the permit fee and a fire review component of a further fifteen or twenty percent of the two combined depending on whether the work includes fire suppression and alarms. Fire inspection is $180.00 for most businesses, $50.00 or $75.00 for a daycare by capacity, with re-inspections at $125.00, $350.00 and $600.00. Signs are priced by type from $85.00, with a $1,000.00 penalty for installing one without a permit. On the Borough side a zoning permit is free, a conditional use permit is $800.00 — expressly waived for child care centres — or $1,200.00 where supplementary regulations apply. • Juneau, AKThe City and Borough of Juneau is a unified home rule municipality with the thinnest licensing layer of the three Alaska municipalities covered on this site and the only general sales tax among them. Title 20, Business Regulations, is enumerated and short — secondhand dealers, hotels, micromobility, alcohol, marijuana and commercial passenger vehicles — with no chapter for food, contractors, salons, childcare, veterinary practice, auto repair or fitness. What replaces a business license is a compulsory but free sales tax registration under CBJC 69.05.170, required before making any sale, service or rental, with no fee, expiry or renewal. The sales tax itself is the substantive obligation: five percent generally, eight percent on alcohol and marijuana and fourteen percent on rooms, with a $25.00 late filing fee, a five percent monthly late payment penalty to a twenty-five percent maximum and twelve percent annual interest. From October 1, 2026 the single-item cap rose from $14,300 to $50,000 and the $30 online filing discount ended. Building permits run a valuation table from $54.00 to $4,706.34 for the first $1,000,000 plus $2.64 per additional $1,000, with plan review at fifty percent of the permit fee for buildings under the residential code and sixty-five percent for all others. Land use fees are modest: a sign permit is $50.00 for the first two signs plus $20.00 each thereafter, a conditional use permit runs $350.00 for a Class I use such as a day care home, $500.00 for Class II including day care centres and commercial premises under 10,000 square feet, and up to $1,600.00 for Class V, with an administrative variance at $120.00 and a zoning compliance letter at $150.00. Fire permits are activity-based, including a $50.00 childcare inspection; the fire fee table lists no fee for the annual commercial inspection the Fire Marshal performs.
