About each permit
Building Permit (Commercial)
Electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits are priced on their own minimum-fee lines ($50 each) rather than folded into the building permit figure above. A bond or letter of credit may be required in lieu of completing site improvements before final inspection or Certificate of Occupancy — $500 or the permit fee (whichever is less) for a single-family residence, up to $5,000 for a commercial building of $500,000 or more in value. Refunds on an issued-but-unused permit are capped at 80% of the permit cost and must be requested within 180 days.
Sign Permit
Two separate fee lines apply to most signs — a Building Inspection Division structural/electrical permit and a Planning and Zoning Division Sign Review — both drawn from the same Consolidated Fee Schedule.
Certificate of Occupancy
West Valley City's Consolidated Fee Schedule (Municipal Code Ch. 1-2), read department by department, publishes no fee for this certificate. The Municipal Code provides that a Certificate of Occupancy cannot be issued until any required impact fee is paid in full and subcontractor license numbers are on file, and that a bond may substitute for completed site improvements before issuance, but the schedule attaches no separate dollar figure to the certificate itself. Confirm treatment for a specific project directly with the Building Inspection Division (801-963-3283) before assuming it is free of charge.
Contractor Verification — Utah DOPL License Proof (West Valley City)
