About each permit

Alternative Subsurface Sewage Disposal System (Septic) Permit

As published on the county's Conventional/Alternative SSDS System Permit Fee Justification (dated 30 June 2026), linked from the current Sewage Disposal page, an alternative subsurface sewage disposal system permit costs $550 ('ALTERNATIVE SSDS PERMIT - $550 FEE'). Williamson County's Department of Sewage Disposal Management, under the Williamson County Board of Health's regulations, permits septic systems; this applies only to a business site that is not served by public sewer. The fee for a conventional system is not published in that sheet; contact the Department at (615) 790-5751 for the current amount and to confirm which system type a site needs.

Septic Operation Permit — Qualifying Commercial/Non-Residential Facilities

Section 7(C) of the Williamson County Subsurface Sewage Disposal Regulations (linked on the Sewage Disposal page as 'Regulations 8-18-2026') states that 'All qualifying commercial/non-residential facilities, that meet the criteria as outlined in this Section 36 utilizing a subsurface sewage disposal system, shall obtain a valid Operation Permit issued by the Department.' It therefore applies only to a business on septic that meets the Section 36 criteria, not to every commercial septic user. The permittee must follow the regulations' water conservation and best management practice requirements, and Section 36 requires an external grease interceptor tank in any commercial/non-residential use where food is prepared or served and plumbing fixtures are present. The Operation Permit must be renewed annually, with the renewal application received 30 days before the existing permit expires, and a new permit is needed before a new use occupies the facility. Contact Sewage Disposal Management at (615) 790-5751.
