About each permit

Salon/Barbershop City Licensing — Business License Applies (Kansas City)

No separate fee applies for a salon: the Revenue Division's Tax Guide for Hair Salons and Barbershops states that hair salons and barbershops 'must be registered and licensed to do business in Kansas City, Missouri', lists the RD-100 registration and the annual RD-105 business license (cost based on gross receipts) as the City's licensing steps, and names no separate salon or barbershop license. The salon also needs the Missouri Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners license. Per the same guide, if all stylists or barbers are independent contractors, the operator and each stylist or barber must obtain their own business license, and booth-rental or service money received by the operator counts as the operator's gross receipts.

Auto Repair City Licensing — Business License Applies (Kansas City)

No separate fee applies to plain auto repair: the Regulated Industries Division's Other Licenses and Permits page lists licenses for 'nuisance' businesses as defined by ordinance — among them amusement places, day labor establishments, short-term loan establishments, a Salvage Yard Permit ($100), a Secondary Metal Recycling Permit, Waste Tire Hauler Registration ($25), a Tire Dealer Permit ($250) and a Waste Tire Site Permit ($250) — and names no auto repair or body shop license. A repair shop that sells tires or keeps a salvage yard falls under the matching permit on that page; a plain repair shop needs the standard RD-105 business license and zoning clearance.

Business License (RD-105)

The Revenue Division's guidance states that a new business must first register on Form RD-100 and then file Form RD-105 for its license no more than 60 days after opening in Kansas City, renewing each year by filing RD-105 before March 1, with the cost determined by gross receipts on the RD-105 fee tables. The separate flat-rate RD-103 schedule (for specific activities such as peddlers, handbill distributors or tow trucks) is a separate City document whose line-item amounts are not reproduced here; contact the Business License Division at (816) 513-1120 for those rates.
