About each permit
Food Establishment Permit
Per the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department's 2026 Environmental Public Health Fee Schedule, a restaurant-type establishment with 0-5 employees pays a $375 permit fee (plan review $175, reinspection $137), and the schedule lists an application processing fee of $106 for a restaurant or market and $53 for mobile units. Another City page states the application processing fee as $100; confirm the current amount with the Environmental Public Health Program at (816) 513-6315 before applying.
Food Handler Card
A facility may instead employ a certified food manager present during all business hours; otherwise 80% of food-handler staff must hold this card. The Health Department also teaches the course in person, in English and Spanish, for $20 for the same three-year card, and runs its own in-person Food Manager's Training Class at $50 for a five-year certification — both paid in advance, with registration required 48 hours ahead. A certificate from the $25 online course must be brought to the Health Department within 30 days to be exchanged for the card.
Childcare Facility Environmental Health Reinspection
The Health Department's 2026 Environmental Public Health Fee Schedule includes a 2026 Childcare Fee Schedule that lists a $0 permit fee for active childcare centers at every capacity tier and for home childcare (maximum 10 children), with reinspection and reinstatement fees of $75 for 0-50 children or a home, $100 for 51-100, $120 for 101-300 and $150 for 301 or more. The schedule sits with the Environmental Public Health Program's food and sanitation fees and is separate from Missouri's state childcare license; contact the Program at (816) 513-6315 for the scope of the inspection.
