About each permit

Assumed Business Name Registration ("DBA")

This is the only county-level requirement listed for Cook County that reaches a business inside the City of Chicago as well as suburban and unincorporated Cook County, because the Cook County Clerk is the county-wide filer under the Illinois Assumed Business Name Act. It applies to a sole proprietorship, general partnership or professional-service corporation trading under a name other than the owner's own legal name; it does not apply to an LLC, corporation, LP or LLP, each of which files its assumed name with the Illinois Secretary of State instead, and it does not apply to a sole proprietor trading under their own full legal name. The fee is a flat $50, filed online through the Clerk's assumed-names portal. No county source describes a periodic renewal requirement after the initial three-week publication and 50-day proof-of-publication cycle.
