About each permit

Individual Electrician or Plumber License

This is Hawaii's second, genuinely separate layer for these two trades. Where the contractor license above covers the business that contracts for electrical or plumbing work, this license covers the individual doing the hands-on work, issued by an entirely different board on a three-year cycle rather than the contractor board's two-year one. A business needs the first; the qualifying tradesperson it employs needs the second — holding one does not substitute for the other.

Beauty Shop License

Barbering and cosmetology are regulated by the same board and require the same beauty shop license, priced at $176 to renew on time — every license shares the identical 31 December deadline in odd-numbered years no matter when it was first issued. Restoring a license after that deadline costs $276, considerably more than renewing on time, or $112 to restore from inactive status.

Veterinary Facility Permit — Hawaii Board Licenses Veterinarians Only

No fee is recorded. The Board of Veterinary Medicine's own page lists exactly one license type it issues — veterinarian — and lists nothing for a premises, facility or hospital credential. The governing statute licenses the individual practitioner and says nothing about the physical location of practice beyond that. An individual veterinarian's own license is $360 to apply or renew, on a biennial cycle ending 30 June of even-numbered years.

Contractor License

A license is required once a project's combined cost of labour, materials and taxes exceeds $1,000 — a strikingly low threshold compared with most states — unless the work needs no building permit and stands alone rather than as part of a larger project. General engineering, general building and specialty work each fall under this same board and this same fee, $338 to renew an entity or sole proprietor license and $208 for a responsible managing employee, on a shared biennial cycle ending 30 September of even years regardless of when the license first issued. Electrical and plumbing contracting sit inside this same system as specialty classifications rather than under a separate contractor board — but the individual electrician or plumber doing the work needs a further, separate license from an entirely different board; see that record.

Motor Vehicle Repair Dealer License

Hawaii genuinely licenses auto repair shops, under their own board separate from vehicle dealer licensing, and prices the license per repair facility rather than per business — a company running several shops needs one for each. A new license issued in an odd year costs $368 in total once the application, license and compliance resolution fund surcharge are added together, along with a half-cycle renewal fee; issued in an even year it is $224, reflecting the shorter time remaining before the shared 30 June renewal date in the next odd year. Every license, regardless of when it was issued, renews on that same shared date.
