Alabama State and County Business Privilege License
The Marshall County Judge of Probate, 425 Gunter Ave., Suite 110, Guntersville, issues the combined Alabama state and county business privilege license; the county's application reads 'Application for Alabama state and county business license' for the license year ending September 30. The county has no schedule of its own, so the ALDOR Handbook of Privilege and Store Licenses (October 2022 edition) sets the amount for each business classification. A restaurant needs a health department certificate before the license is issued. Restaurant tiers follow the statute's population bands for the place where the restaurant sits, and the unincorporated area falls in the lowest band. A contractor takes the license from the Probate Judge of the county of the principal office. This license stacks with each municipality's own business license, which is a separate requirement inside Albertville, Arab, Boaz, Guntersville and the other incorporated towns.
Probate Mail-Renewal Fee for Business Licenses
Ala. Code §45-48-85 authorizes the Marshall County Judge of Probate to renew Alabama business licenses by mail, to mail renewal notices during September of each year, and to charge a fee of up to $2 for all business licenses issued by mail. The fee applies only when a licensee renews or obtains the license by mail rather than in person at the Probate Office at 425 Gunter Ave., Suite 110, Guntersville, and it is added on top of the ALDOR Handbook combined state and county amount recorded for the general privilege license. The statute sets a ceiling rather than a fixed amount, so the exact charge for a given renewal is the one the Probate Office bills.
