About each permit
Restaurant Business Privilege License (Title 40-12, §151)
A restaurant in Lauderdale County buys this license from the County License Commissioner, 102 S. Court St., Florence, phone 256-760-5745, not from the Probate Judge. The amount depends on seats and location. Section 151 puts every place of 5,000 and under in its lowest tier 'whether incorporated or not', so a restaurant in unincorporated Lauderdale County or in Killen, Rogersville, Waterloo, Anderson, Lexington or St. Florian pays $8.50, $12.25, $16 or $23.50 by seat band, while a restaurant inside Florence pays $16, $23.50, $46 or $76. Outside tables and benches are not counted as seats. The figures are combined state and county totals and already include the $1 issuance fee. A Health Department certificate is required before the license is issued, and the cities stack their own license on top.
Store License (Title 40-12, §315)
A retail store buys the section 315 store license through the Lauderdale County License Commissioner. The Handbook prints a $2 total for the first store, $1 for the license and $1 for the fee, and states that no license fee or license is due or payable for the use of any county, so the amount is state-only with no county portion. Product-specific licenses, such as for tobacco, are separate sections of Title 40, Chapter 12 and carry their own fees. Cities inside the county, Florence most of all, require their own business license in addition to this one.
Auto Repair Shop Privilege License (Title 40-12, §54)
An auto repair shop buys the section 54 license from the Lauderdale County License Commissioner: $8.50 for the first man and $7.50 for each additional man, combined state and county totals that already include the $1 issuance fee. The Handbook applies it per location, including home-based shops, and does not apply it to mechanics who work solely from a truck at the customer's site; oil and filter changes, alignments and tractor repair are excluded, and an entity holding the section 51 auto dealer license is exempt. Cities stack their own business license.
Beauty Shop / Manicurist / Barber Privilege License (Title 40-12, §61, §124, §58)
Salons and barber shops buy a Title 40, Chapter 12 privilege license from the Lauderdale County License Commissioner: section 61 for a beauty shop ($16 for the owner, $6 for each additional operator, needed even for a home-based shop), section 124 for a self-employed manicurist or hairdresser outside a section 61 shop ($8.50), and section 58 for barbers ($4.75 first chair, $3.75 each additional chair). The Handbook says a barber who also gives perms, manicures or facials must use section 61. The amounts are combined state and county totals that include the $1 issuance fee. This is separate from state cosmetology licensing and from the Lauderdale County Board of Barbering license for barbers.
Veterinary Privilege License (Title 40-12, §178)
A veterinarian's privilege license under section 178 costs $6 a year, all of it state money: the Handbook says no license shall be paid to the county, so Lauderdale County adds no county portion. It is not due until two years of practice have passed. The Lauderdale County License Commissioner is the local office through which state and county Title 40 licenses are purchased. Veterinary practice itself is licensed by the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.
Beverage / Coffee Sales Privilege License (Title 40-12, §69(b))
The ALDOR Handbook states that section 69 is required for sales of coffee, so a coffee shop needs this license from the Lauderdale County License Commissioner in addition to any restaurant, deli or sandwich license that applies to the food it serves. Only Florence is large enough for the top tier ($38.50); every other Lauderdale municipality has fewer than 5,000 residents, and unincorporated locations, pay $16. The amounts are combined state and county totals and include the $1 issuance fee. The Health Department food permit and any city business license are separate requirements.
Delicatessen / Off-Premises Food Privilege License (Title 40-12, §91)
A delicatessen or a business selling prepared food off-premises, including a food truck, buys the section 91 license from the Lauderdale County License Commissioner for $16 a year, a combined state and county total that already includes the $1 issuance fee. The ALDOR Quick Reference Guide also points food trucks to an authorization letter and a copy of the commissary's ADPH food permit. The county's business-license application lists a copy of the county Health Department permit as required documentation for delicatessens. Sandwich shops use the separate section 153 license, and any city business license is additional.
Sandwich Shop / Barbecue / Hot Dog Stand Privilege License (Title 40-12, §153)
A sandwich shop, barbecue stand or hot dog stand buys the section 153 license from the Lauderdale County License Commissioner for $8.50 a year, a combined state and county total that already includes the $1 issuance fee. The county's business-license application lists a copy of the county Health Department permit as required documentation for sandwich shops, and the ALDOR Handbook makes the health certificate a prerequisite for this license. A business that also holds a restaurant license under section 151 or a delicatessen license under section 91 should confirm with the Commissioner's office which combination applies. Cities stack their own license.
Contractor Business Privilege License (Title 40-12, §84)
A contractor buys this license from the county where its principal office is located; the Handbook says one county's payment satisfies the requirement statewide. In Lauderdale County the County License Commissioner issues it, and the application asks contractors for gross contract amounts. The figures are combined state and county totals from the October 2022 ALDOR Handbook and already include the $1 issuance fee. Contractors may also need a state license from the Licensing Board for General Contractors or the Home Builders Licensure Board, and a mailed renewal can carry a separate mailing fee under Ala. Code §45-39-200.05(b). City licenses are additional.
