How much does it actually cost to permit a auto repair shop in Cuyahoga County?
There is no single figure, and any site quoting one is rounding away the part that matters. Of the 10 records listed for a auto repair shop in Cuyahoga County, OH, 3 apply to every business of this type and 7 are conditional. Adding every fee on the page together would overstate what most operators pay, because it would include permits they never need.
Of the 3 that always apply, 2 carry a flat fee, coming to $100.00. That is a floor, not a total. 3 of the 10 are charged as a range or a formula set by the issuing agency, and 1 has no fee published at all.
The other 3 variable fees belong to permits that apply to every type of business here; their formulas are set out on the Cuyahoga County permits page and the OH state page.

What does a auto repair shop need in Cuyahoga County that other businesses do not?
1 of the 5 permits particular to a auto repair shop here applies to no other business type we cover in Cuyahoga County: Junk Yard License (outside a municipality).
Vending Machine License
A gym, workshop, waiting room or shop that puts a food or beverage vending machine on its premises outside the City of Cleveland takes a vending machine license from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health. The amount is the smallest on CCBH's schedule and is easy to overlook precisely because of that: the 2026 CCBH Food Protection Program Fee Schedule, effective 1 January 2026, prices it at $3.62 local plus $6.00 state, a combined $9.62 a year, with the state portion collected by CCBH and transmitted on. It sits on the same renewal calendar as every other CCBH food license — CCBH states that 'Annual food license renewal applications are mailed in January of each year for renewal before March 1. Licenses renewed after March 1 will be assessed a mandatory 25% late penalty.' The licensed unit is the machine, so an operator with several machines is priced on each of them rather than once for the site. As with the rest of CCBH's food programme, the City of Cleveland is served by the Cleveland Department of Public Health instead, which CCBH's Food Licensing page reaches on 216.664.2300.
Junk Yard License (outside a municipality)
This record reaches a very small number of Cuyahoga County businesses, and the reason is geographic rather than commercial. ORC 4737.07 provides that 'No person shall operate and maintain a junk yard outside of a municipality, except in zoned or unzoned industrial areas adjacent to the interstate or primary systems, without first obtaining a license to do so from the county auditor of the county in which such junk yard is located or in which such junk yard is to be established', and puts the license for a yard inside a municipality with the chief executive officer of that municipality instead. Cuyahoga County's unincorporated territory is Olmsted Township and Chagrin Falls Township; at every other address in the county the licensing authority under the same statute is the municipality, not the Fiscal Officer. The amounts are statutory: 'The fee for a license issued under this section is twenty-five dollars, except that the fee for municipal licenses issued under this section shall be reduced by the amount paid by the licensee for any similar licenses issued pursuant to ordinances of such municipality. All licenses issued under this section shall expire on the first day of January following the date of issue. A license may be renewed from year to year upon paying the chief executive officer of the municipality or the auditor of the county in which the junk yard is located the sum of ten dollars for each such renewal.' Because the license expires on the first of January whatever month it was issued in, a yard opening in the autumn renews within weeks. The auditor may revoke it, after reasonable notice and an opportunity to be heard, for any violation of ORC 4737.01 to 4737.12 by the licensee or its officers, agents or employees. The trade test is what the business actually does: an ordinary mechanical repair shop has no trigger, and this applies only where the business operates as a junk or salvage yard. The $25 and $10 figures are read from the statute; the Fiscal Officer's Licensing and Support Services page names Vendor's Licenses, Cigarette Vendor's Licenses and Dog Licenses as the licenses it publishes process pages for, so an applicant should call the office on 216-443-7420 to file.
