What does a contractor or trade need in Arapahoe County that other businesses do not?
3 of the 3 permits particular to a contractor or trade here apply to no other business type we cover in Arapahoe County: Building Contractor License (unincorporated Arapahoe County), General Contractor License — Colorado position (licensed locally) and Electrical Contractor Registration.
Building Contractor License (unincorporated Arapahoe County)
Resolution No. 23-155 of the Arapahoe County Board of County Commissioners, adopted under C.R.S. 30-11-125, states that no person shall engage in the business of a building contractor or perform work for which a building permit is required under the Arapahoe County Building Code in unincorporated Arapahoe County without first obtaining a license of the appropriate type from the Building Division of the Public Works and Development Department. It repeals and restates Resolutions 180258, 22-222 and 22-344 and took effect immediately. License classes cover Class A, B, C and D building contractors, Class A-C mechanical, roofing, solar and retaining wall/fence contractors, radon, water conditioner and fire alarm systems contractors, each with certification requirements (ICC or equivalent for most classes). Section 20 sets the annual fees: $360 for Class A and B building, solar, mechanical, roofing and retaining wall contractors, $180 for Class C building or mechanical, $84 for Class D (a flat fee under section 22, other than fire alarm/detection contractors), and $132 for fire alarm systems contractors; the Building Official evaluates the fees at least every two years. Licenses run one year from application or renewal. Section 9 requires liability insurance of at least $2,000,000 per occurrence for A or B certification holders and $1,000,000 for other contractors, naming Arapahoe County as additional insured, plus workers' compensation where state law requires it. Section 13 states that electrical and plumbing contractors licensed by the state under Title 12, Articles 23 and 58, C.R.S., are not required to obtain a license under the resolution. A contractor working inside a city or town applies to that municipality.
General Contractor License — Colorado position (licensed locally)
The regulatory agencies department's licensing and permitting page lists the credentials it issues alphabetically, with electricians and plumbers (each including contractors) among them, and its list contains no general contractor entry. Municipal and county building departments license contractors instead, and Denver shows how sharply: its contractor licensing page states that Denver does not accept or reciprocate contractor licenses or certificates from other counties or states, that licenses and certificates renew every one to three years depending on type, and that a Colorado electrical or plumbing license substitutes for Denver's own supervisor certificate. A contractor working across the Front Range needs a separate license in each jurisdiction.
Electrical Contractor Registration
Electrical is one of only two construction trades Colorado licenses, and to perform electrical contracting you must be registered as an electrical contractor as well as employing licensed electricians. No fee is recorded because none is published anywhere: the licensing division's standing instruction is that fees are on the respective applications and forms, the posted forms carry no fee table, and the rules refer only to the current fee. The amount appears solely inside the authenticated checkout. What is published is the permit side, on a schedule effective December 2024 — new residential wiring runs $146 up to a thousand square feet, $218 to fifteen hundred and $292 to two thousand, and the inspection fee doubles if the permit is filed after work starts. The state only inspects where the local jurisdiction runs no electrical inspection programme of its own. Plumbing works the same way, on a two-year cycle expiring the last day of February in odd years.
The other 2 local permits in the tables apply to every type of business in Arapahoe County, CO; what each one involves is set out on the Arapahoe County permits page. The 4 state-level registrations apply to every type of business across CO and are covered on the CO state page.
