About each permit

Day Care Zoning District Restrictions

No separate fee applies beyond the standard building/occupancy fees. A day care center cannot locate within 300 ft of a liquor license or 500 ft of adult retail/entertainment, is prohibited outright in the RS1–RS6, RT1–RT3, RM1, and RM2 residential zones, is treated as a special use in commercial/downtown districts, and faces restricted hours in industrial/park/lakefront zones.

Fire Prevention Permit

Administered by DNS Commercial Code Enforcement, not the Fire Department directly. Applies to public buildings, places of employment, and residential properties with 3 or more units. Related fire-system permit fees: fire alarm panels $140 each, fire alarm devices $18/device, sprinkler heads $110 (1–15 heads) scaling down per head above that.

Commercial Building Permit

Odd structures (parking lots, tank towers) are billed at 1.6% of construction cost, minimum $150, instead of the per-square-foot rate.

Certificate of Occupancy

Genuine three-way conflict across official city sources: a 2010-dated info sheet shows $200/$400, a live DNS page shows $275/$425, and this codified ordinance (revised through April 2026, the most current) shows $375/$575. The ordinance figure is used here.

Sign Permit

Confirmed directly against the codified fee ordinance: the 1% construction/alteration permit fee and $10 processing fee are listed under § 200-33-51 ('SIGNS'), while the 0.9% plan-examination fee is listed separately under § 200-33-41 ('PLAN EXAMINATION, SIGNS') — the same base-fee/plan-exam-fee/processing-fee structure the ordinance uses for every other permit type in this chapter, each its own numbered subsection. DNS's own Plan Review and Permit Fees summary lists the 0.9% sign fee under its 'Plan Examination Fees' page, distinct from the sign permit fee itself, corroborating that these are genuinely separate, additive charges rather than the same fee described twice.

Veterinary Clinic Licensing — City of Milwaukee position

There is no city license fee for a standalone veterinary clinic beyond the Wisconsin state veterinary board: the City Clerk's Licenses and Permits list names no veterinary entry, and Code chapter 78 exempts veterinary hospitals from its kennel and grooming rules. Quoted directly: 'Nothing in this section shall apply where kennel services are incidental to the operation of a veterinary hospital' and, for grooming, 'Nothing in this section shall apply to an establishment where grooming is incidental to the operation of a veterinary hospital.'
