About each permit
NNPH Child Care Facility Inspection
Northern Nevada Public Health inspects child-care facilities throughout Washoe County, and its Child Care Program page states that 'Facilities are inspected annually.' The inspection fee is $348 per inspection. The figures are from Northern Nevada Public Health's official 'EHS Fees FY27' schedule, the FY2026-27 schedule effective July 1, 2026. NNPH has scheduled a public hearing on proposed Environmental Health fees for December 17, 2026. The same page states that child cares 'may be required to maintain a kitchen permit, depending on the type of food activities conducted', in which case the NNPH food establishment permit (its own record) also applies. The operating license itself is a state license: WCC 45.096 (Ord. 1730) states that 'Any person desiring to provide child care in Washoe County must first obtain a license from the State of Nevada Division of Welfare and Supportive Services as outlined in NRS 432A.024.' Apart from child care in private homes for six or fewer children, which WCC 25.015(2)(a) exempts, a child-care business in the unincorporated area also needs the county general business license; inside Reno or Sparks, the city's business license applies instead. Ask NNPH EHS at 775-328-2434.
NNPH Food Establishment Permit (fixed and mobile food units, countywide)
Northern Nevada Public Health's H-463 Mobile Food Guidance states that it is unlawful to operate a food establishment within Washoe County without an NNPH permit, and NNPH issues that permit throughout the county, including Reno and Sparks. A new establishment, a change of ownership or a mobile unit's change of service area pays a $706 application fee; the annual permit is priced by risk level (Food Establishment Regulations 010.725): $338 for Risk Level 1, $469 for Risk Level 2 and $1,334 for Risk Level 3, or $1,044, $1,175 and $2,040 together with the application fee. Construction plan review is a $601 base fee plus $572, $967 or $1,363 by project size, and a remodel review is $601 plus $836. Late payment adds 25% of the annual permit, and a reinspection costs $273. The figures are from Northern Nevada Public Health's official 'EHS Fees FY27' schedule, the FY2026-27 schedule effective July 1, 2026. NNPH has scheduled a public hearing on proposed Environmental Health fees for December 17, 2026. Food trucks and other mobile units use the same rows: NNPH's Mobile and Portable Units page directs operators to submit the Washoe County Mobile Food Permit Application with all applicable fees, and H-463 requires an opening inspection and risk-level assessment under Chapter 190. NNPH's Child Care Program page states that child cares 'may be required to maintain a kitchen permit, depending on the type of food activities conducted.' Ask NNPH EHS at 775-328-2434.
NNPH Temporary Food Event Permits (organizer, vendor, annual itinerant, special event)
A vendor serving food at a temporary event anywhere in Washoe County, including Reno and Sparks, needs a Northern Nevada Public Health temporary food permit, and the event organizer needs its own permit. The organizer permit for a 2-5 day event or one with 6-20 booths is $847 and must be submitted at least 14 days before the event. A vendor permit must be submitted at least 7 days before the event: high-risk vendors pay $189 for 1-3 days, $320 for 4-7 days or $584 for 8-14 days, and low-risk vendors $225 for 1-7 days or $357 for 8-14 days. A vendor working events all year can instead take an annual itinerant permit ($1,541 high risk, $1,278 low risk), submitted at least 14 days before the first event; the annual producer/sampling permit is $357. Events with 5,000 or more attendees need a special event permit to operate ($1,672 base plus $273 an hour), submitted at least one month ahead. Missing the submittal date adds a late fee of 100% of the permit fee, and applying within 3 business days of the event adds 200%. The figures are from Northern Nevada Public Health's official 'EHS Fees FY27' schedule, the FY2026-27 schedule effective July 1, 2026. NNPH has scheduled a public hearing on proposed Environmental Health fees for December 17, 2026. Ask NNPH EHS at 775-328-2434.
NNPH Swimming Pool / Spa Operational Permit
A fitness studio or gym in Washoe County that operates a swimming pool or spa needs a Northern Nevada Public Health operational permit for it; a studio without a pool or spa has no pool permit to obtain. The operational permit, which covers seasonal and annual pools alike, is $761 a year, and a new facility pays it together with the $413 application fee printed in the Pool - Spa section of the schedule, $1,174 in total. Building or remodelling a pool or spa needs NNPH plan review first: $3,536 for construction and $657 for a remodel. The figures are from Northern Nevada Public Health's official 'EHS Fees FY27' schedule, the FY2026-27 schedule effective July 1, 2026. NNPH has scheduled a public hearing on proposed Environmental Health fees for December 17, 2026. NNPH permits apply countywide, including Reno and Sparks. Ask NNPH EHS at 775-328-2434.
NNPH Invasive Body Decoration Establishment Permit (tattoo, piercing, permanent cosmetics)
A salon that offers tattooing, body piercing or permanent cosmetics anywhere in Washoe County, including Reno and Sparks, needs a Northern Nevada Public Health invasive body decoration (IBD) establishment permit; a salon offering only hair, nail or skin services is licensed by the Nevada state boards rather than under this permit. The annual establishment permit is $445, and construction plan review for a new studio is $445. The schedule marks the establishment permit with an application fee but does not print its amount; contact NNPH EHS for the current amount. Temporary body art events need a $878 event coordinator permit, submitted at least 30 days ahead, and each vendor a $430 permit (without wheels, at least 14 days ahead) or a $277 mobile vendor permit (with wheels); late applications pay 100% or 200% of the permit fee.
