About each permit

Uniform Fire Code Inspection and Business Registration (County Fire Marshal, Six Served Municipalities)

The county Office of the Fire Marshal page states that the Fire Marshal's responsibilities include enforcing 'the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code and Fire Safety regulations for the County of Middlesex, as well as Highland Park, Middlesex, Milltown, City of South Amboy and the Boroughs of Dunellen and South River.' The page lists the inspection of life hazard uses, the inspection of non-life hazard uses (except owner-occupied one- and two-family dwellings), fire safety compliance and fire safety permits among the office's major activities, links a Business Registration Application, and states that applications may be emailed to firemarshal@co.middlesex.nj.us. The record therefore applies to a business premises in one of those six municipalities, and a premises elsewhere in the county is outside its scope. The county page publishes no fee amount, so no figure is given here.

Welding/Torch (Hot Work) Permit (County Fire Marshal)

The county Office of the Fire Marshal page links an Application for Welding Torch Permit and states that applications may be emailed to firemarshal@co.middlesex.nj.us. The county form asks for the date, time and location of the work, an on-site contact and the company's details, and lists propane, open flame, welding, torch and generator as items for the permit. The form states: 'THERE MUST BE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER ON SITE OR PERMIT WILL NOT BE ISSUED', and that for a roofing permit a one-hour fire watch must be conducted after hot work is performed. The applicant agrees to comply with the fire code and any conditions imposed by the fire official. The form has an office-use 'Fee Amount' box but prints no amount. The Fire Marshal page names the County of Middlesex and six municipalities as the area where the office enforces the Uniform Fire Code.

Outdoor Dining Propane Pedestal Heater Approval (County Fire Marshal)

The county Office of the Fire Marshal page links 'Outdoor Propane Heater Regulations for Outdoor Dining', a Fire Safety Fact Sheet on propane pedestal heaters written for restaurants offering outdoor dining. The fact sheet states that prior to approval a completed permit application, a drawing of the proposed layout of heaters, tables and canopies, the specifications of the heating units and the proposed cylinder storage location must be submitted to the Fire Marshal's office. It states that the heaters are for outdoor use only, cannot be used under canopies or tents at any time, must be commercially rated, must keep at least five feet from structures and overhangs and twenty feet from tents and canopies, and that indoor storage of propane cylinders must be approved by the Fire Marshal and may not be in a basement. The fact sheet prints no fee. The Fire Marshal page names the County of Middlesex and six municipalities as the area where the office enforces the Uniform Fire Code.
