About each permit
Motor Vehicle Repair Facility Registration
Michigan does register repair shops, unlike most states, and the scale changed only weeks ago: Public Act 59 of 2025 replaced the old bands on 1 July 2026 with five revenue tiers running from $100 under fifty thousand dollars of gross annual revenue to $500 above three hundred thousand. The old scale started at $25 and every secondary source still shows it. Renewal uses the same table against the most recent complete tax year, and a facility above three hundred thousand may renew for up to four years at once. Late renewal costs one and a half times the fee. Registration reaches anyone repairing for compensation, including part-time work outside a registered facility, and zoning and municipal approval must be attached to the application. An auxiliary facility shares the registration number but must be within three miles and admit no customers.
Mechanic Certification
The cost scales with scope, because a mechanic must pass a test for each repair category worked in and each test is $18 — a figure that also changed on 1 July 2026 under the same act. Certification renews annually at $20, with a late fee of half the renewal. Three categories require recertification every five years — engine tune-up and performance, electrical systems, and brakes — while the rest do not. A trainee permit lasts two years and cannot be renewed. National ASE certification does not substitute for state certification, though its categories may convert.
