About each permit
Trade Contractor License and Surety Bond (Electrical, Mechanical/HVAC, Plumbing and other trades)
This is the genuine local credential Kansas's own state layer predicts should exist: the state licenses no general contractor, electrician, plumber or HVAC trade itself, leaving that entirely to local government. Unlike Wichita and Sedgwick County's joint MABCD department (a single Class A/B/C/D system) or Johnson County's standalone 11-class contractor licensing division, the UG runs this itself through its own Building Inspection Division using a bond-plus-occupation-tax model rather than a tiered class system. Separately, the UG's own DotteBiz portal names a 'General Contractor License' as its own distinct specialized license category — a real, confirmed-to-exist step — but no page reachable in this research states what that license itself costs beyond the occupation tax and bond figures above, so that additional figure is not published here; confirm directly with Business Licensing (913-573-8780) before assuming the figures above are the whole cost of entry.
Certificate of Occupancy
The UG's own current fee schedule prices only a 90-day Temporary Certificate of Occupancy, at $100, and separately charges a $200-per-building administrative penalty for occupying a commercial structure without one. No fee for a standard, non-temporary certificate of occupancy is published in the Unified Government's own current fee schedule; contact UG Building Inspection for any charge that applies to a standard certificate on a given project.
Building Permit (Commercial)
Re-inspection fees escalate for repeat failed inspections: $100 (1st), $150 (2nd), $225 (3rd), $337.50 (4th). A footing-and-foundation fee of $200 applies to commercial and multi-family work (per building, first request), and an administrative penalty of $200 per building applies to occupying a commercial structure without final occupancy or a temporary certificate of occupancy. Every general contractor and subcontractor performing this work must also hold the UG's own occupation-tax-based trade license recorded separately above.
