About each permit

Grease Interceptor Operating Permit or Low Grease Discharge Waiver (Johnson County Wastewater)

Johnson County Wastewater's Food Service Permitting page states that grease interceptors and Grease Interceptor Operating Permits (GIOPs) are required for all commercial Food Service Establishments, and that the establishment's owner applies for new construction, tenant finish or remodel, and changes of ownership. The permit covers operation of the interceptor only; installing, modifying or repairing an interceptor needs a separate commercial sewer permit. An establishment that serves only ready-to-eat foods with no preparation other than warming, prepares only uncooked food to be cooked elsewhere, or makes baked goods may qualify for a Low Grease Discharge Waiver (LGDW) instead. The page lists a $290 GIOP fee before the initial permit, a $348 LGDW fee before the initial waiver, and a $290 annual renewal for each. The 2026 Code states that the operating permit expires on April 15 of each year, and its definition of a food service establishment excludes a facility that only prepares beverages and one that only sells prepackaged foods, so a beverage-only coffee shop is outside this permit. Interceptors must be pumped and cleaned at least once every 90 days for most establishments. The Code applies to property served by the county's sewer facilities. The figures are those published on Johnson County Wastewater's current Food Service Permitting page. The Johnson County Code of Regulations for Sanitary Sewer Use, 2026 Edition (approved by the Board of County Commissioners on March 26, 2026), sets the operating permit fee "initially" and lets JCW raise its fees by up to ten percent a year after notice to the Board and publication; the increase notices are not published on JCW's pages. Commercial Sewer Permit and Connection Fee (Johnson County Wastewater)

On property served by Johnson County Wastewater, JCW's Commercial Permitting page states that a commercial permit is required before constructing a new building and connecting it to the public sewer, adding to an existing building's footprint, demolishing a building, repairing or replacing building sewers or sanitary appurtenances such as grease interceptors and oil separators, converting from a private sewage system to the public sewer, altering a site near public and private sewers, and a tenant finish or remodel that modifies the plumbing system or changes the type or volume of wastewater discharged. The page lists a $220 permit fee that includes one inspection, a $440 plan review fee for projects that require review, a $38 inspection fee per trip after the permit is issued, a $100 permit revision fee, and connection fees by domestic water meter size from $4,850 for a 5/8-inch meter to $242,550 for a 6-inch meter; redevelopment projects receive credit for the previous building's meter. Applications are filed through the MGO Connect portal, first reviews take up to 14 calendar days, and the page states that wastewater permits are valid for one year. The figures are those on JCW's current Commercial Permitting page; the 2026 Code refers to a fee schedule adopted by the Board of County Commissioners. Contact: commercial@jcw.org, 913-715-8520.
