About each permit

Salon or Barbershop License

A salon or barbershop within 1,000 feet of another personal-services establishment needs a Special Use Permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals on top of this license, and BACP paperwork must already be on file before that permit can even be sought.

Animal Care Facility License

Covers grooming, boarding, breeding, training and day care for dogs or cats. Whether a pure veterinary medical practice — diagnosis, vaccination, treatment or surgery only, with no grooming or boarding — needs this license or only the state veterinary license is not resolved on the city's own page, so this record is scoped to a facility offering those additional services rather than asserted as a blanket veterinary requirement.

Children's Services License

Required in addition to, not instead of, the state DCFS license. A Children's Service Facility may not also hold a liquor or tobacco license or conduct amusements, with limited exceptions, and every day care other than a small home-based one is a Group E or I occupancy under the certificate-of-occupancy rules above.

Motor Vehicle Repair License

Reaches any location that repairs vehicles, replaces parts or diagnoses malfunctions, including a business that only stores, alters or repairs tires. A spray booth used for auto body work additionally needs a separate CDPH environment permit, and storing more than 100 tires at once triggers a Fire Department inspection.

Business License

Chicago has no single flat business license fee — most specific trades either fall into the Limited or Regulated category shown here, or carry their own dedicated license entirely, as the salon, restaurant, contractor, auto repair and animal care records below show.
